Do you have any parenting tricks that worked on you?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24462points) August 19th, 2019

I will start:
My grandpa tricked me into doing the yard work by refusing to let me do it. I protested and showed that I could do it and all was awesome. To this day I love pumping gas and doing yard work.

Not really. My parents believed in spanking when we were naughty, and wash mouth out with soap for swearing. I got both several times when I was little. I do not use, or even think of swear words since I was about 12. However I didn’t really become as I now am until after my first child was born, and I had to be good to prove I deserved him.

I used to keep a tape of Yoko Ono in the car, and I would play it when they were bad.

I also showed them Monty Python And The Holy Grail, then I would tell them if they didn’t behave I would say “Nee!”. They would immediately behave, knowing it’s funny.

Parenting tricks as you described @RedDeerGuy1 are a form of lying to children, which is a form of child abuse. A good parent never lies to children, because when the truth comes out, trust is ruined.

My mom did the ‘I love you, but I dont like you right now. Get to your room.’
Worked well on me.

@zenvelo A kid acting up can ruin a parents trust, too. Seems like a two way street imo.

@KNOWITALL One is the parent, the other is a child. The parent is the one who models behavior and sets an example. It’s a one way street.

@zen At some point in adolescence it becomes a two way street. Calling to check in, being at the pick up point on time, etc… Thats what I’m referring to.
