Does anyone use know any quick songs I can learn?

Asked by speakerhead (256points) August 27th, 2008

I need to teach some of the underclassmen in my Guitar class and I need to teach them an easy song, doesn’t matter what song, but it has to use a variation of, G, E, A , and C.

The theme from Jaws is pretty easy!

Do they know D or D7? That as the second chord I learned to strum in my intro guitar class. I they do there are a ton of tunes I can recommend.

How old are said students and how hip are they to the “classics?”. If they’re not that savvy I might be inclined to go more traditional ditty than rock or folk stuff.

I think the first song I learned was “Hang Down Your Head Tom Dooley”

Pretty much any classic rock song with a I-IV-V chord progression can be modulated to G-C-D or A-D-E; if your group doesn’t know an open D chord, then an easy song would be a I-IV pattern, like The Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction.

@sndfreQ – It’s D major. They are basically learning all the majors right now. They just learned D today.

The easiest is Louie Louie with the very predictable G-C-D-C.

Another easy one is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer; basically (off the top of my head) it goes like this (each chord can be strummed as four quarter notes in one measure):

D D D A A7 A7 A7 D
D D D A A7 A7 A7 D-D7

G D A D E A E A7 (<—bridge)

D D D A A7 A7 A7 D

Also a camp favorite: On Top of Old Smokey…G D A D / G D A D

Jerky Love Song by Grammatrain is a pretty quick song. It only lasts about 44 seconds.
