Why don't they change the school bus laws?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) September 3rd, 2019

In every close encounter of a child getting hit by a car that blows past a stopped school bus, the kid is crossing the street (or highway) by themselves, AND the kids are just running out into the street without looking.
Why haven’t the parents taught the kids to look both ways before crossing the street, and to never run while crossing the street?
Why aren’t the parents meeting the bus to walk the kids across?
Why don’t they change the routes so the kids get dropped off on the same side of the street the bus stops on?
Why doesn’t the bus driver get off the bus and act like a crossing monitor?

Cars NEED STOP !!!!

Don’t “dis” the parents of school kids; for dumb shits that hit kids, if parents were there the dumb shits would still hit the kids!

We’ve had three near misses since school started two weeks ago in my county.

The driver cannot leave the bus, for safety reasons!
Or maybe the NRA should shadow school buses and shoot out tires on the dumb shits cars.

But there are cars that DON’T STOP!!!!! The kids need a back up plan for those cars that don’t stop, but they don’t have one. In every single instance the kid has run across the street without looking. WTAF???

Give guns to the kids to shoot out the tires J.K.
Kids are getting off a bus not in the middle of a freeway or military firefight.
Maybe throwing out Stop-sticks” to pop tires every time they stop the bus, instead of a Stop sign with flashing lights.

Back to NRA idea, they’d like popping some “caps”.

We have cops in unmarked cars on some roads following buses.

We need an actual solution to protect the kids from stupid drivers who don’t stop. Flippant, silly answers isn’t it.
They are getting off the bus and forced to walk across the street. But, being kids, they just RUN! Every single clip you see they are RUNNING and they are NOT LOOKING.

Yes, there are stupid drivers who don’t stop. There are also stupid kids who don’t stop or look both ways no matter how much you tell them to. You can only do so much in trying to shield people from their own stupidity.

I think the easiest solution would be for the bus to stop on the side that the kid lives on. However, some bus routes in some cities may be really long. Where I live, the bus route is about 10 minutes in each direction, so for the bus to pass by and then turn around, it’s only about a 10 minute wait. In a city where the kid is on the bus for an hour and a half, it may mean passing the kid’s house and then returning an hour later.

Another idea is for the bus to have a monitor who assists with kids fighting and acting up, and then can get off the bus and cross the kids. Ideally, the parent would go to cross the kid, but a monitor could have a hand held “STOP” sign so that drivers would be more careful.

Also, police cars on bus routes would deter people from being stupid.

In NYS, I believe the buses now have cameras which would help catch idiots.

There is a solution, and it’s teaching kids to look before they cross the road.

For the ones that can’t grasp that, well, it might be better for the health of the species.

We put camera’s on the outside of the bus this year, to crack down on unsafe drivers disrespecting the buses.

Our bus drivers in small town USA are really good, and pull into the middle of a two lane, so no one can pass unless they go off road. It’s prevented many accidents.

Good suggestions @jca2. The monitor could be some high school kid that gets minimum wage during that time.

When I was a kid in Florida, about 7, I rode the bus. I have a memory that is so clear to this day, of some stupid woman, in the lane next to the bus, going the same direction as the bus, starting to just drive through the extended stop sign.
The bus driver got on the horn, which made the lady stop her car, and my bus driver started yelling out the side window at that lady;
“Can you not read? Do you not know what this sign means?!” the bus driver yelled, pointing at the sign.
The lady got an extremely confused look on her face and said, “Go on?”
The bus driver about got apocalyptic as she screamed, “NO!! IT MEANS STOP!!!! STOP!!!!”
A light went on for the ditzy lady in the car and she nodded her head in understanding, and just sat there, halfway through the stop sign until the driver retracted the sign and told her to go on.
She was just that stupid.

@Call_Me_Jay I agree. As I pointed out above, every single kid that got hit or almost got hit, just ran out from in front of the bus and into the street without looking. They ran, which gives neither them or any cars time to react.

Our first line is the stopped bus with the stop sign. But we can’t stop there (ha ha!) We have to have multiple back up plans, starting with teaching children how to cross the feckin’ street. If the parents won’t do it, then the schools need to.

About a year ago, I was in the city that I used to live in (a crowded and historical city in NY) and I was looking at the old buildings as I drove on the avenue. My head was turned to the right and all of a sudden, when I looked at the road again, there was a school bus stopped on my left with the two stop signs out (one at the front of the bus and one at the rear). I’d already passed the stop sign at the front of the bus. I slammed on the brakes and I was stopped totally parallel next to the bus. There was a monitor at the front of the bus to help the kids cross. I felt like an idiot. I was very nervous that the cameras on the bus (if it had cameras) would have gotten me a ticket sent in the mail but it didn’t happen.

I’m betting that in that city, they see cars pass the school buses all the time.

In the area I work in, which is more rural, I see school buses pull to the middle of the road as described by @KNOWITALL. That helps. Also there are police vehicles along the bus routes.

Here @Dutchess_III is the law for NC.
North Carolina Passing a Stopped School Bus is a Crime

Most traffic violations are infractions, however, passing a stopped School Bus is a class 1 misdemeanor. The maximum punishment for a Class 1 misdemeanor is 120 days in jail. Typically, if found guilty of unlawfully passing a stopped school bus, one would not be sentenced to active jail time but rather probation and/or community service and some type of driving school.

Hasn’t stopped them from breaking the law..

KNOWITALL's avatar

@jca2 Interesting…police vehicles….I like it.

Dutchess_III's avatar

As I said, @Tropical_Willie, we need other tangible lines of defense than just a law and a stop sign.

New York state penalties for not stopping for a school bus:

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, maybe we need to make stiffer penalties. When they drastically tightened up drunk driving laws DUI accidents decreased dramatically.

kritiper's avatar

You can stop some of the cars all of the time and you can stop all of the cars some of the time, but you’ll never stop all of the cars all of the time, laws or no laws. Accept the inevitabilities.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

No @kritiper. I refuse that casual dismissal of school children’s lives.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Dutchess_lll What do you want “attempted murder” if they pass a stopped bus with lights on with minimum of 35 years ??

Dumb shits will still drive 10 miles an hour over the limit and go past the flashing lights, you care a lot and they don’t give a fuck!!!!

kritiper's avatar

@Dutchess_lll Be that as it may, you can’t have your cake and eat it too, which is what you want.

Dutchess_III's avatar

What are you talking about, “have my cake and eat it too,” @kritiper? Could you be a bit more specific because you have me scratching my head.

All I suggested @Tropical_Willie, was that they make stricter laws. Why are you taking it to such extremes?

What the hell is wrong with you two?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Dutchess_III Okay I’ll bite what would you do for stricter laws? ? ?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Using jca2’s link as a guide line, I say 1st offense, minimum fine $500 and up to 60 days in jail.
2nd offense $1000 and up to 6 months in jail
3rd offense $2,000 and up to a year in jail.
4th offense, $2,000 and up to a year in jail and loss of driver’s license for up to 2 years.
