Do you have a favorite music video?

Asked by anniereborn (15511points) September 15th, 2019

I’m talking a video created specifically for a song from a specific band. More conceptual than just a shot of them playing.

I have three I can think of off the top of my head, but there are many I love.

Scareface’s (Original Video) of “On My Block” (on YouTube.).. Even if you don’t like hip hop, it’s worth 3 minutes, of your time. If you watch it, you’ll know what I mean…

My friends and I discovered this “trippy” Spanish music video when we were sophomores in college. Yes, it has gratuitous female frontal nudity and it’s a bit excessively hipster, but it’s still one of my favorites.

I love their music, but I also appreciate the sense of humor in some of their videos.
I’m not saying who, but one of them looks so much like my youngest boy’s daddy, you could almost convince me he lived a double life.

Michael Jackson, Thriller. Quite different from the album version, and as a horror nerd who can resist the zombie dance?

I love these videos, movies, etc that use chess for the symbolism of war, master strategy, intelligence, etc….and then they set the board up incorrectly. lol.

@Caravanfan Lol, Spinal Tap rock!

Patty_Melt's avatar

@Darth, but there is the truth to the symbolism, isn’t it? War is not intelligent. It is not organized. It does not follow a rigid set of rules.

Truth be known, somebody just assembled odds and ends together because hearing music was no longer enough.
Videos were, and are, frequently just bits of bric a brac thrown together to make an alternate way of enjoying the music. Some, like Michael Jackson, made it more like a mini movie.

I think it is actually a role reversal of what music and movies are to each other.
Movies have background music, sometimes with lyrics which mirror the activity of the movie, and some which simply has a sound befitting the attitude of the scene.
Someone turned that around. Some music videos show what the lyrics of the song is trying to express, and some simply have images which randomly fit the feelings evoked by the song’s sound.
Nobody cared ding about setting up a chess board. The important part was the cool face makeup on the young woman.

@Mastema2 Mudvayne is from the area I finished out my high school years. I knew the drummer, Matt McDonough. We actually went on a few dates. He was such a sweet guy. Very talented.

@Patty_Melt “but there is the truth to the symbolism, isn’t it? War is not intelligent. It is not organized. It does not follow a rigid set of rules”

Which is why chess is actually a poor analogy for war, politics and anything of the sort. A game that starts off in perfect balance, with two completely equal sides, with an agreed upon set of rules and fairness where all information is available to both sides at all times – yeah, nothing at all like war or politics.

But no, I doubt that sort of symbolism was intended in this case. I think it was probably more just a matter or someone not bothering to check. No biggie, I actually find it funny in that cheesy, Spinal Tap-esq way that the entire video is. This sort of stuff only really bothers me when in something where chess is a plot point. Like some movie I saw once where the whole movie revolved around a chess game and one player won by “checkmating” the other guy via a move that put his own king in check (flagrantly illegal, as one cannot make a move that puts one’s own king in check).
