What are your favorite board games, and why?

Asked by Caravanfan (13526points) September 17th, 2019

I’m not talking RPG, card games, or games like chess or backgammon. I’m talking about games like Pandemic, Wildlife, Carcassone, Ticket to Ride, etc. Board games that you would buy in a board game store.

I will have follow up questions depending on the response to this one getting more specific.

Why doesn’t chess count?

@SQUEEKY2 Because it’s not what I’m interested in. I’m interested in the type of board games that Wil Wheaton does on Table Top.

I haven’t played all that many board games, but I do enjoy Pandemic, as well as Alhambra (a game I’ve often played with my family), Sushi Go (a fairly recent game that’s fun to play with a group at parties), Machi Koro (I’ve only played this one a few times and I probably wouldn’t remember how to play it now, but I greatly enjoyed it when I did, complicated as it is), and of course the classic Catan (another game I’ve had fun playing with my family). I like board games that involve some strategy but also aren’t too hard to learn and don’t take too long to play.

I like tons of games, but my favorite non-RPG boardgames tend to be wargames and simulation games. Games with crunch that try to give you the experience of a situation in detail, like Squad Leader, Star Fleet Battles, Wooden Ships & Iron Men, Ramspeed, and some lighter ones like The Awful Green Things From Outer Space.

I have been trying some lighter more recent games out, and they’ve been kind of fun and interesting but they don’t tend to hold my interest very long because they’re so lite and abstract. One of my favorites of those is Robinson Crusoe.

I’m not big on board games, except occasionally looking to do something family oriented with a child, and so it would be Life. However, we had a lot of fun on several occasions playing Sorry.

Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly, Scrabble. I usually play poker and Farkle as an adult.

I used to like Yahtzee and scrabble, and still play Rummikub with my husband, because he likes that one. Those probably does count for this Q. Does Pictionary count? We used to play that too.

When I was very young I also liked Clue, I wonder if I still would. Also, you sank my battleship, Connect Four.

As an adult I play cards and sometimes dominoes (they play a lot of Mexican train dominoes where I live) and as I mentioned above Rummikub.

I want to try Apples to Apples. People tell me it’s really fun.
