I hope Greta gets the prize. What a wonderful girl she is and what a wonderful woman she will become.

Aster's avatar

I’m guessing neither will receive the award.

ragingloli's avatar

Neither. Hopefully.
Nothing against the girl, but talk is cheap, and I expect her words to fall on deaf ears.

Patty_Melt's avatar

Greta doesn’t represent peace in any context.

Besides that, her passion is misplaced. IMO, she had it right when she said she should be in school.

Teens get causes in their blood, and passion gets them all worked up. If climate is such an issue for her, she should steer her, education towards the areas of science which can make a difference. Pitching a hissy fit at world leaders won’t accomplish anything.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

Greta deserves the award.

Stache's avatar

Certainly not tRump. Anyone who throws a hissy fit and says they deserve the award does not deserve the award.

kritiper's avatar

Greta for sure. And Time magazine’s person of the year.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Greta for sure, we will be lucky if Trump doesn’t start WW3.

ucme's avatar

Strikes me as ironic & well, just plain wrong, that something so laudable should be reduced in stature by associating it to the beast that is competition.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Maybe she is doing just that @Patty_Melt.

flutherother's avatar

They can’t give it to Twitler, the man who single handedly tore up the Iran nuclear deal and has vowed to increase America’s nuclear arsenal “until people come to their senses”. But you never know.

Stache's avatar

^also on the same day he said he deserves the award he said Biden deserves the electric chair. The man only cares about himself. He doesn’t give a shit about anyone else.

janbb's avatar

I believe she will get it. There is no doubt in my mind that Trump will not.

Dutchess_III's avatar

There was no doubt in my mind that trump would NOT win the election, too.

Aster's avatar

Trump really said Biden deserves the electric chair and I missed it ? Hilarious!

Stache's avatar

^you think that’s appropriate coming from your President?

Damn, his followers are nuts.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Going to agree with you @Stache .
And they claim we Dem/libs are all hate just sit back and listen for a second and we can tell where the real hate is coming from.

janbb's avatar

She was just nominated by some of the Norwegians on the committee.

Inspired_2write's avatar

Neither as there are others who we will see are nominated to compare.
I feel sorry that a child is placed before the world by her parents, teachers etc
This sounds like this girl is afraid and thus almost in tears.
I can’t believe that it is just her as someone in the background is coaching her to say to follow an agenda on saving the environment.
I see in the news that many schools and parents are pushing by persuasion there children to give a voice to their agendas.
These people have discovered a unique way to voice a message prompted by there elders.
Wonder what Dr Phil would say?

Demosthenes's avatar

^Shame is basically what our society runs on in 2019 and a message coming from children has a stronger potential to shame to action those the message is directed at. That’s likely the goal here (and I wouldn’t assume that her words are not her own; we seem to praise teenagers when they voice opinions we agree with and dismiss them as know-nothing puppets when we disagree with them). While I do agree that more action is needed on climate change, a lot of ranting and raving is all I’m seeing at the moment, but I am willing to see if it produces anything meaningful in the end. I’m skeptical of the import of the Peace Prize given that it has been awarded erroneously in the recent past. I’d give Trump the Peace Prize for firing Bolton (though that might be canceled out by his having hired him in the first place).

Stache's avatar

For the haters or those who think her parents put her in this position: https://www.m.liker.com/public/posts/43845

SEKA's avatar

Greta hands down. Pitching a hissy fit over others hissy fits is unbecoming our military personnel

chyna's avatar

@Aster Damn, trump followers are evil. Biden has done nothing to deserve being put to death. It’s because of statements like this that trump and his followers are put down so vehemently on this site.

SEKA's avatar

^ Another reason to vote Dem

Patty_Melt's avatar

I’m still wondering how anyone thinks this girl has done anything to promote peace around the world.

Besides her behavior not having one scrap to do with promoting peace, she isn’t even that great a public speaker. I have witnessed far better from younger.
People are just wanting to hand out a cuteness award. However, I would give that to neither one.

Trump got NK to back off on the missile launches. Japan was sweating it big time. That puts him far ahead of some little girl who rants at the grown ups.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Missed the mark @Patty_Melt

“Trump got NK to back off on the missile launches.” Hasn’t happened except in wet dreams of the Bozo in charge. “North Korea Missile launches”:

Stache's avatar

@Patty you sound like a very bitter person saying such mean things about a young girl. What do you and every other right winger saying nasty things about her have issue with? How could any of you take issue with someone wanting to help better our planet? I just don’t get it. It’s truly disgusting.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Fright wingers think there is no problem, and what they can’t explain chalk it up to just nature NOT anything humans have caused.

kritiper's avatar

She might get the prize for science over peace. There are more than one prize, you know…

Patty_Melt's avatar

I didn’t say anything nasty about her. While the rest of you are admiring the emperor’s new clothes, I am calling a duck, a duck.
How’s that for artfully blended metaphors?
To suggest there is anything special about that little girl beyond her timid smile, is to be utterly deluded.
There’s at least one million persons inhabiting this planet who are more deserving of the Nobel Peace prize than her.
To say she hasn’t earned it isn’t awful, it is plainly honest.

raum's avatar

As much as I support Obama, I think his Nobel Prize nomination (just nine months into his presidency) marked the change of the Nobel Prize towards something more symbolic than actual achievements.

Which is why I think Thunberg may actually win. There are people who have achieved more things. Yet she represents the hope of what our youth can achieve.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I also thought Obama’s Nobel Prize was kind of silly.

Aster's avatar

I found it. Trump said IF A REPUBLICAN DID WHAT BIDEN DID HE’D GET THE ELECTRIC CHAIR, Just another humorous bit of exaggeration. He didn’t believe it when he said it. It was not EVIL just the way he sometimes talks.
I recall Trump telling Hillary during the debates, ” you’d be in jail” and the audience laughed although neither Hillary or Trump even smiled. This is all just Trump’s personality. I guess nobody is used to it even after all this time.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Just shoot me if I ever become dead enough to “get used to” that fecking idiot.

chyna's avatar

@aster You finding humor in something like that is evil. You think trumps personality is funny?

Aster's avatar

Yes; I find him quite humorous . I don’t think an electric chair in and of itself is funny at all, of course. Any more than I find murdering inconvenient newborns by stabbing them with scissors in their tiny neck reasonable..Yes; I , and thousands of others, think Trump is funny. I’m an evil person, after all.
I also believe in a Supreme Being. But do not despair. You can watch while salivating with joy the so called ïmpeachment process” until he’s elected next year and that’ll be so entertaining. And funny, hopefully.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Oh @Aster. You don’t realize that the things you find “funny” are things he does and says that aren’t meant to be funny. It’s “funny” to people who are watching because he says such dumb shit. Covefe.

mazingerz88's avatar

Nobel prize and trump? HA HA HA!

janbb's avatar

@mazingerz88 I only asked the Q because apparently he suggested it. I have no reason to believe the committee would even consider it.

mazingerz88's avatar

Not so sure anymore what the Nobel Peace Prize is about. I’ve always thought it’s for people like Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa and Gandhi. So when I heard Obama might get it ( did he get it? ) my reaction was wait what?

trump the failed casino business man, reality TV show host and hotelier have always been a whore for attention and self-promotion. If I’m not mistaken he was obsessed with being featured in the NYT and Time magazine.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That was my reaction too when I heard that. I love Obama dearly, but I thought it was a bit premature. He hadn’t even done anything yet.

mazingerz88's avatar

I’m afraid the Nobel award committee is acting like the Oscars these past several years. Lowering their standards.

chyna's avatar

^So true.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@Inspired_2write “This sounds like this girl is afraid and thus almost in tears.”

And why shouldn’t she be? She and those of her generation are going to inherit a ruined world while those with the power to do something about it refuse to do anything other than kick the can down the road.

“Wonder what Dr Phil would say?”

Who cares? “Dr.” Phil is a fucking fraud and is not a licensed medical or psychiatric professional.

Darth_Algar's avatar

@raum “As much as I support Obama, I think his Nobel Prize nomination (just nine months into his presidency) marked the change of the Nobel Prize towards something more symbolic than actual achievements.”

The Nobel Peace Prize became a bad joke when they awarded it to war criminal Henry Kissinger.

raum's avatar

Good point.

Didn’t Kissinger support a Nobel Prize nomination for Trump too?

Dutchess_III's avatar

(Is he even still alive?)

flutherother's avatar

@Dutchess_III The good die young. He is 96 years old.

Dutchess_III's avatar

That’s how Rick’s dad was. He passed just last July.

flutherother's avatar

Sorry to hear that.

Dutchess_III's avatar

He had a good life. He still lived alone in the house he bought in 1954. The boys were raised in that house.

Patty_Melt's avatar

My real answer to this question would likely be scoffed at and ridiculed by all, so anyone who feels they might suffer harm from an honest and different perspective should not read beyond this sentence.

I think the peace prize is not about who can pass the most rainbows from their arse, but who is getting their hands dirty to make peaceful objectives more attainable. I think this year it should be Kim Jung Un.

North Korea has been an ass pain on this planet for decades. Many people have lost their lives over the flea bite.
Kim has made mistakes, big boomy ones, and little headache ones, but I think he sees that there is a big old world around him, and that his country is not viewed as a desirable neighbor.
I think he is at a loss how to transition his country, and the lives of all those people, without effing up the whole deal.
I think political figures have represented to him over his life a long line of lies, greed, and tyranny. He wants more, but feels he is not taken seriously on the world stage.
Whatever wrongs he may have committed, he has reached out like none of his family before him. He wants to try. I think he wants to clean up his yard without the neighbors whispering and laughing. I think it would require strong convictions to face what he is, and will face. I think if the peace prize is going to be used as a popularity award, it’s purpose is defeated already. It needs to buck the traditional ideas of popularity, or turning the other cheek. To have any value, it needs to go to someone who is not afraid to risk a little body odor to right what has been previously wrong, even if they don’t see results before they die.

There. I said it.

Darth_Algar's avatar

Your answer isn’t scoffable, but your attitude is.

Patty_Melt's avatar

At least my attitude isn’t one of perpetual hate and cynicism.

Stache's avatar

Someone is in denial.

Patty_Melt's avatar

@Stache, your proof, please.

Stache's avatar

Your perpetual hate and cynicism is all over these pages. That’s your proof. One just needs to look at ‘your story’ on your page.

Greta Thunberg is the very embodiment of Lyanna Mormont from Game Of Thrones. How can you not love her?
