How do you get people to imagine a future that is vastly different from today?

Asked by friendlyviking (12points) August 28th, 2008

I want to create an environment in which I can get people into a mindset of what the future might look like without influencing them by the stimuli I use to get them to that mindset. Any ideas?

Show photos/videos of 100 (150, 200, whatever) years ago first, then ask them to visualize the future.

There are a lot of resources out there to promote brainstorming. Look for things to increase imagination. Check out books like Thinker Toys and Games Trainers Play. Create an environment that lends itself to creative thinking. Have toys, dictionaries, crayons, calculators, balloons, coloring books, books of wise quotations, and any right brain stimulating stuff available. Then present your group with the assignment in the form of a question. “What can the future look like?”

Write some brief short stories. Focus on how one person deals with specific interactions (person-to-person, person-to-tech, tech-to-person) and how it affects their day. It has worked for sci-fi writers for quite a while…
