It varies between different family and friends.

ragingloli's avatar

I do not have any friends.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me -Closest friend?
@ragingloli -By choice or circumstance?

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Closest is almost perfectly aligned.

Most are more liberal than I am, including my best friend. I grew up in a progressive area and most of my friends hold those views. A couple are more conservative (though they are not my closest friends). I don’t know anyone who matches my views exactly. But we have some interesting discussions. :)

Castle's avatar

Most of my friends share the same stances.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me -It does make things smoother
@Demosthenes -My husband and I think a lot alike. Close friends and I have different political leanings.
@Castle – Most. :)

KNOWITALL's avatar

Nope, many of my closest friends are liberals.

We have sort of reached an understanding – my friends and I – that it’s not wise to talk politics (in particular) and religion (some aspects) because we know from past history that we aren’t going to degree.

Sort of a tacit detente.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Close family does, but my friends lean a bit more right than I do.

ucme's avatar

Some do, some don’t & you know what? None of us give a rat’s arse about each others views on those two thorny subjects…which is nice.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ucme – So no boxing matches, then?

LadyMarissa's avatar

Absolutely NOT!!! I’ve had a BFF for 69 years & we were a lot alike when we were younger; however, in navigating our lives, we’ve pretty much become polar opposites at this point. She’s a flaming Rep where I don’t like either party. According to Fluther, I’m a Dem. She’s a hard core Christian who thinks there is only ONE way to do anything unless she’s doing it a different way…then it’s OK. She goes to church EVERY time they unlock the doors where I’m more laid back. I have my beliefs but I don’t try to force them onto others. Had we met later in life, I don’t think we would have ever become friends; but, I’ve learned to love her…just like she is…I don’t have to agree with her in order to love her!!!

My Mother raised me that there are 2 things that you don’t discuss in life…politics
& religion…because BOTH are personal opinions & EVERYBODY has the right to their own opinion!!!

With my BFF, I don’t bring up either subject. When she brings them up, I change the subject!!!

@lucillelucillelucille Nah, the occasional quizzical look perhaps but no fisticuffs thank goodness…I bruise like a banana.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@LadyMarissa – My parents told me the same thing but add money to that.

canidmajor's avatar

It depends entirely on specifics. People who support the policies that seriously hurt/kill other humans are not people I can be friends with. My family of origin constantly support such things, I know longer have anything to do with them. I have lost a few friends in recent years as well.

Zaku's avatar

Yes, they align, or they’re more atheistic or agnostic.

I have one Republican/Literal-Christian aunt, oh and an anti-Mexican uncle, and a cousin who is Libertarian/Lizard-Illuminati-is-Real.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Zaku ‘Lizard-Illuminati-is-Real.’

Bahaha!!!! I know two of those!

rebbel's avatar

I like to ignore the differences we have on controversial subjects, with the few friends that I have (and fortunately there are not many (differences)(and friends…)).
What I do have difficulty with is when someone preaches to be ‘tolerant’ to gay (‘s) (issues), but acts anti gay in practice, for example.
Or say they’re of course not discrimating towards other people, but don’t like [fill in nationality].
That I will point out, that discrepancy.

raum's avatar

As the current political climate continues, it’s becoming narrower and narrower. Though to be fair, as I’ve gotten older my pool of friends in general has gotten smaller.

Family is all over the place politically.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@rebbel – :)
@raum- Mine too. By choice.When you consider how much time one has on earth,it makes some decisions easier.

raum's avatar

Yup. There’s only so much time.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@raum – I tell myself that often LOL!

Dutchess_III's avatar

My favorite people are liberals with some brains. Religion doesn’t matter.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

@Dutchess_III Where have you met liberals with some brains??

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

The OP does not mention family, so I will answer regarding friends only.

My friends’ political views align closely with mine. People who are not part of a marginalized community do not understand that this is done as a safety measure. There are many people on Earth who want to kill me since I’m gay. I take my survival seriously. There are even more people who want to deny me basic human rights.

To paraphrase James Baldwin, we can agree to disagree until the reason we’re disagreeing is that you want to deny my basic humanity.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake – Correct. Their rights end where your nose begins.
Do you and your family share the same views?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Intelligent liberals are everywhere, @ARE_you_kidding_me.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake – Mine are mostly in alignment but we don’t talk about it often.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I live 5000 miles away from most family for a reason.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake -Lol! I am about 90 from the one I disagree with the most. Sometimes, being in the same solar system would be too close.
