Do you think Desiderata is inspirational?

Asked by josie (30934points) October 28th, 2019

On many occasions, on Fluther and with friends and family, I have quoted a line or two from Desiderata as advice or council.

It seems to me that, absent outrageous circumstances, there is a relevant passage for almost any of life’s normal challenges.

I prefer Deteriorata

Go placidly
Amid the noise and waste.
And remember what comfort there may be
In owning a piece thereof.
Avoid quiet and passive persons
Unless you are in need of sleep.

Me, no, not at all.

But I can see how people would. Sort of a Cliff’s notes for people who need direction on how to behave..

For me, a lot of things that are supposed to be inspirational are not. Those business posters that you see hanging up at some work locations, that have photos of mountains or animals with some inspirational quotes, interesting to look at but not too inspirational. That’s just me.

I appreciate the general message of it. But the…delivery of it kind of puts me to sleep. Wrong tempo for me personally. But I can see how it might be inspirational for others. I’m sure some stuff that I find inspirational would put other people to sleep.
