What are some large or small things you do to benefit whoever might be coming after you?

In public restrooms they often have the toilet paper in those dark holders and sometimes you have to go through contortions to find the loose bit on the roll so you can pull it. I always make a point to leave it pulled out enough so that anyone coming in behind me can find it easily.

I used to leave coins in the payphones for kids to find.

I leave a very large space between me and the cars in front of me so people can move in and out of the the lane I’m in very easily.

What are some things you do or have done?

When I exit the elevator, I press all the buttons to all floors, so that the person calling it to his floor has some extra time to ponder the beauty of all things small and precious.

Any way you look at this, it’s a question about inheritance.

I eat a lot which makes me fat and slow. That way if anyone is coming after me, they can catch me pretty fast.

I like this question, but it was quite hard to think of anything. I managed now:

When the bus announcements don’t match up with the right stop, I let the driver know when I get off. I also often stop or hold trams when I see people running up to them. People do that for me regularly, too.

Sometimes I leave bathrooms cleaner than I found them. And I pick up plastic in the forest, but more for animals and nature itself than just people.

I hold doors for most people. I also leave a couple quarters at the car wash for someone behind me.

There’s probably more that I can’t think of.

I often pay road tolls for the car or cars behind me. I have bought coffees and meals for the cars behind me in drive-throughs. If I am walking on a busy street and someone is right behind me I turn around and walk backwards and engage them in a conversation. You can meet some interesting people walking backwards.

There are two types of people in this world: People who leave space for cars to get in front of you with ease, and people who speed up so they can’t get in. I like to let people in my husband is the kind who speeds up. : /

I used to run ahead of the meter maid with a roll of dimes, feeding every meter that was about to expire.

Yes, it helped all of those cars. But I have to admit I did it mostly to thwart my nemesis.

She would sit and wait for meters to expire and write you up as you’re running towards your car. And hand you the ticket with a smile while you were still out of breathe.

Worth every dime.

@BackinBlack My husband is the same way. I don’t think he’s even conscious of it. One time we were driving. There was a car in front of us, and a car on our left. There was plenty of room for the car on the left to move to the right if he needed to….and he needed to, apparently. But the instant his blinker came on Rick sped up and closed that gap. WTAF? WHY??!!

@Dutchess_III Maybe you should ask him why he does that.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I know why. He thinks some one is “beating” him. Also, he used to race professionally, so sometimes he does shit on the road from habit, without even thinking. But that’s OK. I’m right next to him, thinking outloud for him.
