How well did you take care of your clothes as a kid?

Asked by ucme (50047points) November 20th, 2019

Did they last a real long time?
Or did you tear them to shreds through adventurous play?

Reasonably well.
I had play clothes and dress clothes. Kind of like now, except there was no coffee spills on my little girl clothes.
I even used a smock when I painted back then. Now I don’t and often don’t use one when throwing clay. wth happened?

I wore what ever mom put me in and tore all around. I remember having on a really nice coat, and crawling into an earth and branch cave. I was concerned about getting it dirty, but it didn’t stop me. Mom never said anything.
We had school (the other kid on the right is my daughter, who insisted on wearing that git up to school! I hung on to the dress because mom made it.) and church clothes and play clothes.

I too had play clothes and dress clothes. Most of my clothing was outgrown before destroyed, and I was tiny. I wore the same favorite nightgown for seven years.
I was toughest on shoes. We got one pair each of dress and gym shoes. By the end of the summer, when it was time to get new shoes for school, my gym shoes were usually “wap wap wap”.

I went barefoot all summer, unless there was some reason to wear shoes some place. And even then we got over on grocery stores and the like, we hid our feet by gripping the hem of our bell bottom jeans with out toes and walk through the store like we were mildly crippled.

I too spent all summer barefoot. I had callouses so thick on the bottom of my feet, I could step on a burr, and pull it out, and feel nothing.

@Patty_Melt Brings back memories of running on gravel roads. it took awhile to get to that point in Spring.

It does take a while to get there…more toward the middle of summer for me….but when I do get there I get “How can you walk on that?!”

All my clothes were hand-me-downs from my more well to do cousins (not rich but not poorish like my family.) What was left of those clothes were handed down to my brother and once both knees, most of the butt and all the pockets were patched or sewn back on were they then given to charity. I had my first and only new pair of jeans when I went to High School and still had them when I graduated college.

I thought we were poor until one unusual day I accompanied my mom on her Avon rounds. (All farm dwellers like us.)
Before we left, she put a bunch of paper grocery bags in the trunk, full of who knows what.
During her rounds we went down a long dirt driveway I hadn’t been to before. Little red headed kids came out of everywhere as we pulled to a stop.
Mom told me to get the bags out of the trunk and bring them inside. A couple of them felt lumpy in the bottom. I found out later some of my brother’s toys, and some of mine were hidden under the clothes.
When I got in the house, mom was giving the lady a bunch of free samples, which were actually full sized new products sent to the sales reps so they could try them.
I had a new appreciation for keeping my clothes nice.

When I had $5 blue jeans they lasted a week, as a teenager, , the more expensive ones lasted for the whole school year. I take better care of my clothes seeing I need to get Big and Tall clothes that are pricey.

My dad was a bit of a drunk. And he would come home from the bars and get fighty. So we learned to sleep in our clothes and shoes so we could make a quick exit to a hotel for the night. Luckily, dad made bank and didn’t notice or care my mom spent more on hotels than our mortgage.

But 30 years later, 90% of the time I fall asleep fully clothed, including shoes. So that is hard on clothes and I mostly buy cheap stuff that can be replaced for 15 bucks.

I had parents for that.

I wore, they provided. It never crossed my mind.
