Sometimes it is “wow!”.

This morning it was “damn those are the baggiest eyes ever”. Other times it’s “bedhead is an understatement.”

We should embrace the way we look first thing after waking, after all, that’s what our partners see as we cuddle & say good morning.
If It’s good enough for her…

I do most of my introspective thinking, when I first look in the mirror. I’m pretty hard on myself.
I eventually get to a point where I try to motivate myself, and remember that I am not so bad, and that it’s me against the world. And that’s not a fair fight. I look at my scars, and recall what I’ve survived. I say it isn’t a fair fight, because I’ve overcome SO much. FTW… I’ma be me. Come and get it world.

I haven’t tried this, but they say that this is a very scary thing to do:

Stand in front of a mirror. The lighting must be soft and low. Now stare into the mirror intently but let your mind relax. In short order, the image in the mirror will not look like you. To accentuate the effect, try to smile or smirk.

The effect is said to be scary and deeply affecting. If you dared to try it, let us know what you experienced.

Not sure if you mean the same thing as this—but stare into your eyes directly and nothing else for forty seconds or more, There will be horrible and terrifying distortions of your face in your peripheral vision.

@Yellowdog Yes, that’s probably what it is. Do you know why it happens? Because, if it’s in the peripheral vision, as you say, why doesn’t it happen immediately but only after a minute or so?
