Is there such a thing as a small pocket/sack in the throat where food can get stuck?

Asked by windex (2932points) August 30th, 2008

I don’t know what you would call that space. There are People who BLOW in your NOSE and whatever is stuck there come out (of your mouth). I know it sounds like something a witch doctor would do, but these “Specialists” Charge for it and do it. help.

You could have a pouch usually at the back of the throat which can make swallowing hard.

However this is not normal ie not everybody has one.

I sure hope there isn’t. I have enough things to worry about already…

it could just be that the food gets pushed up at the back of your throat, that would explain why blowing your nose would cause the food to come out of your mouth, I suppose.

I’ve never heard of such a thing. As far as I understand, the nasal passage meets the mouth toward the back (near the throat). I have never heard of a pocket/sack back there, though I do sometimes get dog hair stuck in my throat for days.. related?? No idea.

I’m no doctor, so have fun with these as you will: MRI scan of skull & CT cross-section of skull.

What is the symptom of the food being “stuck” in this case? In certainly can’t be that the victim is choking or they would never have time to get to the “specialist”.

I remember seeing a magician who pushed a garden snake up his nose and pulled it out of his mouth and that’s because you have a clear path in which to do that. Ear, Nose and Throat doctors put a scope up your nose and pass it down he back of your throat to see your vocal chords.

No, you just MIGHT feel that there is something stuck, but you can just go on about your business.

I’ve “Heard” it (food) can be stuck there for a LOOONG time without you ever knowing/caring, and once this “specialist/voodoo doc” blows (the angle has to be Exact) in your nose then the bits and pieces fly out of your mouth (or end up in your mouth, which you would then spit out)

I know it just sounds crazy, I wanna know = ]

I hate those things if you gag and cough at the same time it helps clear them out

There is an anatomic imperfection known as a Zenker’s diverticulum‘s_diverticulum within which food can get stuck. Is that what you meant?

I’VE BEAT SHILOLO! (edit: darn, i didn’t see him right above me – he probably appeared while i was getting the emedcine link – i’ll get you yet, shilolo)

an esophageal diverticulum is just such a pouch. A Zenkers is a subtype of esophageal diverticula. I don’t know how blowing in the nose will get food out of it, though. Usually food stays there, rots, and gives the person killer bad breath
