Are there any 'red' thermometers as on Frosty the Snowman?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) December 14th, 2019

All thermometers I’m actually familiar with are mercury, which is grey. But Frosty hates thermometers when they get all red. The familiar Rankin Bass Christmas special shows a red liquid rising.

Consequently, many believe thermometers ’ liquid to be red. I don’t think there are any red thermometers.

Does anybody know any different?

Alcohol dyed red is the “Red” in Frosty’s thermometer.

Visit your local hardware store and you will see “red” thermometers.

I have had red thermometers of all sorts. Outdoor weather thermometers, oral fever thermometers, science -40 to +215 F thermometers.

Aside from digital thermometers I’ve never seen one that wasn’t red.

Yes! They had them at the Dollar Tree store. I bought 8 at $1 each. They all read slightly different temperatures so I put them together with one of my lab thermometers and adjusted them to match the lab unit by sliding the glass tubes. It was easy.
I now have one each in the refrigerator, 2 freezers, barn, outside of house, garage, and woods near the fish pond. They were a great investment.

Mercury thermometers were considered too dangerous to use, so many thermometers have clear alcohol dyed red in them. The majority of thermometers are red alcohol not silver mercury because mercury is poisonous. Link
