What was the most practical gift anyone has ever given you?

A few years ago, a friend gave me a really practical gift that I use all the time. It’s a small bag, like a gym bag (maybe 2 feet x 1 foot x 1 foot) and in it, she put (all new) pajamas, tooth brush, tooth paste, contact lens cleaner, contact lens case, and a few other toiletries like deodorant. I have a pair of eyeglasses in there. If worse comes to worse I can throw the contact lenses away and wear the eyeglasses 24/7. I have underwear in there, too.

It’s to keep in the car for those times when maybe you get stuck somewhere and need to sleep over unexpectedly. I also use it for if I’m traveling and have my luggage but maybe forgot something, like a toothbrush or something to sleep in.

I change out the toiletry items from time to time, like the contact lens cleaner, that expires. If I wear something, like the pajamas, I’ll wash them and then put them back in the bag. It was such a thoughtful idea and a good idea. Every time I use it I think of her because the bag is really a life saver and has come in handy so many times.

What is the most practical gift you’ve received?

A set of pots and pans, when I went to live on my own.
Gifted by my parents.
Still have them, 27 years on.
Both the pots and pans, and my parents.

My husband gave me a Jeep. It still is practical years later.

A set of metric box, open-end, and socket wrenches. Believe me now or tighten my nuts later, I actually asked for them. ;-p

The first time my daughter did her own shopping and with her own money she got me a hand tool similar to Swiss army knives. It folds back to extend grips to needle nose pliers, and in each grip flat and Phillips drivers, a file, and blade.
I use it for something most every week.

My sister bought me a toaster oven when I got my first place with roomates. She knows how I am about food (hygiene monster) and how much I love the party pizza (totinos).

That toaster oven has made so many party pizzas, hot pockets, tater tots, fish sticks, texas toasteseses, lasagnas, chicken nuggets, chicken strips, chicken pot pies, pizza rolls, taquitos, and I have used it to dry out some weed too.

But yeah, got a good decade out of that thing and being able to make some great food without leaving my room.

Two books: Road to Responsibility and From Foreign to Familiar. The first book is about how to manage classroom, and the second book is about different cultures around the world. I still find the knowledge useful today :)

My Dad gave me, and installed, a ceiling fan over my bed. I was about 2 years into peri-menopause, and here in Southern California, especially at that time, we were in about our 4th year of a perpetual heat wave, always in the 80s to 90s. It was hot, and I was hotter, due to the hot flashes. That ceiling fan saved my sanity.

For my Birthday I was given several pairs of socks from my Brother, not any ole socks, these are the thick warm toasty ones, they keep my legs cozy, I love these because I get much comfort from them in colder seasons.

Well, this year my Dad’s wife sent me a clear, hard plastic container for hard boiled eggs. I know it because when we got home yesterday Cato had pulled it off of the Christmas table and opened it.
