Isn’t driving barefoot much safer than driving in flip flops?

Don’t know, but it sounds gross.

I think it is illegal in at least some states. I’m pretty sure it is in the state I tested in Maryland, when I was a teenager. Or, maybe it was just advised against doing it, and not actually illegal.

It’s not safer to be barefoot. You need your feet protected so you don’t risk hurting your foot and not being able to press the pedals. In an older clutch car it’s pretty difficult to use the clutch barefoot in my opinion. Maybe in the newer Japanese and American cars the clutch is so soft it’s not a big deal.

I knew people who drove barefoot regularly when I lived in NY as a kid.

Generally speaking I’d say sturdy footwear is probably recommended. I have slide on shoes I won’t wear when I drive a clutch car. Really cheap flip flops that can fall apart or curl under your feet easily I won’t drive in either with any type of transmission. I do wear slip on shoes though in an automatic if they fit well and are sturdy.

Illegal in Georgia. Has been for 40 years. But how is the law enforced? Do the police set up foot-check blockades?

I do it from time to time, for short distances.

I’m going to ask a cop I know.

Cop says “There’s no law that says you cannot.”

This is in NY.

I always wondered, for places where it may be illegal, how would a cop know? Cop can’t see your feet when he’s standing outside your vehicle.

I like to drive barefoot. Especially if I’m in a manual vehicle. My big feet grab the clutch, accelerater, and brakes, better. I have huge feet. They work, like hands.
I have better control over the vehicle, with bare feet, than with any type of footwear.

It should be. I was told in 1973 that it was illegal in Nevada. I’ll drive with shoes, thank you.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

It’s not illegal in any US state to drive barefoot.

I am not in a position to believe you or not believe you. I’ll drive with shoes on, thanks.

Yes you are @kritiper. Simply Google it.

@kritiper: You are free to wear shoes, of course, but just FYI it’s not illegal to drive barefoot in any state. Here’s one of many links: https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/is-barefoot-driving-legal-2013-05-15
