Regarding the recent rash of antisemitic attacks, are the attacks connected?

Asked by JLeslie (65416points) December 29th, 2019 from iPhone

There have been several antisemitic attacks recently in NJ and NY, and the little I’ve read they were all during Chanukah, and the couple people who I saw were arrested were African American.

Have all the perpetrators been African American? Have any of them talked about it all being organized and connected? Have they said why they targeted Jewish people?

Just connected by the current spirit of hate fostered by the fat, old, orange one.

Only through the “Bad comb over” !!

KNOWITALL's avatar

I havent heard a word about it.

LostInParadise's avatar

Where Trump goes, hate crimes follow Coincidence? I think not.

When Obama got elected, I thought it marked a new era of tolerance. Apparently not. White supremacists were seriously spooked and rallied behind Trump.

@JLeslie Just watched world news and Googled, wow, that’s horrible. Is this infighting?

Earlier this month, a gunman with ties to the Black Hebrew Israelite movement, who had minutes earlier shot and killed a police officer, entered a kosher grocery shop in Jersey City, across the Hudson River from Manhattan, and killed three people, including two Hasidic Jews.

@KNOWITALL It is not infighting. It is anti-Semitic attacks.

chyna's avatar

It’s anti-Semitic. Not sure how anyone could mistake any of these reports as in fighting.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@janbb & @chyna I posted the article, I’m not familiar with the Black Hewbrew Isrealite movement and assumed they were part of the Jewish community. That’s why I asked. Geez.

rebbel's avatar

This gets reported widely in the Netherlands (I take it that it will in the rest of Europe as well).
Do I understand it correctly that this gets less coverage in the States?

So far I haven’t heard of them being connected.

canidmajor's avatar

@rebbel, no, it’s extensively covered here, I am surprised that someone was not familiar with it.

Demosthenes's avatar

I don’t know that they’re connected in that any of these people have connections with organized hate groups, but I do think these attacks are symptomatic of a larger scale rise in “hate” in this country.

Yellowdog's avatar

@KNOWITALL The Black Hebrew Israelies are a Black Muslim cult.

Do you remember the group in Washington that was harassing Nicholas Sandman and those kids with the MAGA hats from that Catholic school from Covington, Kentucky? Those were the Black Hebrew Israelites.

They are vehemently anti-Israel, anti-Semitic, and anti-Trump.

Yellowdog's avatar

To all: It is really bizarre that any of you are blaming Trump for anti-Semitism, considering his support for Jews, Israel, and the Left’s rancor for Trump for his support for Israel.

Every group or individual I can think of who hates Jews also hates Trump.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Yellowdog Oh wow, okay. I originally assumed the perps were white since everyone blames Trump for anything having to do with racial issues.

Here’s a more detailed, blunt article:

In fact, the group and the milieu around it tend to view religion through a racial lens, such that Jews are described as “white” and “fake” and the “real Jews” are portrayed as black, along with all the prophets and religious figures. The ADL pointed out that this group views itself as the real “chosen people” and that it sees people of color as the real descendants of the 12 tribes. The group was in the media earlier in the year in Washington DC when they shouted insults at Catholic high school students.

I just read about the Black Hebrew Israelites, I had never heard of them before. They aren’t Jewish. They are a hate group of black people who are antisemitic and anti-white trying to say they are direct descendants of Israel. It looks like they maybe practice some traditions of Judaism, but they do Christian things too. They are terrorists. It’s not infighting. Mainstream Jews don’t consider these people Jewish.

I’m not clear if this group did all the recent attacks.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLeslie And this is concerning as well (from the same article I posted above.)

The murder of three people at a kosher supermarket in Jersey City was mostly ignored in the United States. No rallies or marches against the antisemitism that led to it. No major political upheavals or even much recognition. The usual anger over gun violence after mass shootings was nowhere to be found. The victims and the perpetrators are inconvenient. America as a whole can’t mourn Orthodox Jews and it can’t confront perpetrators when the perpetrators come from a minority community. This is inconvenient antisemitism and it is a kind of antisemitism privilege.

canidmajor's avatar

We read different stuff.

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL Many many antisemitic threats and attacks don’t get picked up by the national media. This has always been true.

As a side note, I think technically mass shooting is 4 or more dead, but I don’t think that’s why this wasn’t reported.

JLeslie's avatar

I shouldn’t say wasn’t reported, it was reported, but just didn’t get as much attention as some other incidents.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLeslie Agreed. Since many Trumpers are pro-Jew, this would put the Dems in a bad position, just my take. If it’s not slamming Trump, it’s not worth their time, even though some Jews are armed and policing their own neighborhoods now. To me, that’s newsworthy.

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL It’s not unusual for synagogues to have armed guards or hire off-duty policemen. In these particular neighborhoods I don’t know if there are usually armed people walking around. Orthodox Jews vote for Trump. It’s basically Trumpland in those neighborhoods.

I do think if a white skinhead with swastika tattoos had done the attacks it would have spread like wildfire across the news the second it happened in the climate we are in, but even so, it still holds true that antisemitic threats and attacks are often not reported or barely get attention. Since this was a rash of incidents the attention grew.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@JLeslie Is that because they are perpetual targets or ?

The article I read said they have stepped up security after multiple attacks.

Honestly, I figured that because many are pro-Trump, that’s why it wasn’t covered much, but I guess you’re saying their marginalized still in America?

YARNLADY's avatar

These attacks have been well covered by CBS and NBC. In my opinion, it is more copy cats than connected. Someone who already hates sees a report and is incited to do the same.

JLeslie's avatar

@KNOWITALL I wouldn’t say because they are perpetual targets. I could be wrong, but I think the “news” is so much about ratings and money, and they run whatever gets a lot of viewers. How long it stays in the news just depends on if people are still watching, or if some other horrific even replaces it as a news story. You might be right though. I was shocked to realize how many shooting or guns in schools were reported locally when I lived in Memphis, but I dint think it was picked up in the national news.

@YARNLADY That sounds very possible. One of the negatives about reporting is giving other horrible people ideas.

LostInParadise's avatar

At least one prominent member of the Black Hebrews is an ardent Trump supporter Trump brings out hatred from the most unlikely places.

janbb's avatar

Here a relevant article from today’s New York Times about the causes of the rise in anti-Semitism in current times.

@chyna Remove the “is” at the end of the link.

@chyna See if this link works better.

Yes, it works. Good article.

Yellowdog's avatar

@LostInParadise Blacks for Trump is a really bizarre, cultlike organization. I’ve seen their website. It really isn’t much different from the Black Hebrew Israelites. It looks like it was all written by someone who is not all there.

LostInParadise's avatar

Which makes them likely to be Trump supporters

Yellowdog's avatar

Well, not many Trump supporters believe blacks to be Jews. So… Ida know. Maybe, but I think not.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@Yellowdog The logic is the other way around, Black Hebrew Israelites are Trump supporters not the other way around.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

Anyone can convert to Judiasm….I think.

Yellowdog's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Then why did they attack the Covington KY High School kids with the MAGA hats?

JLeslie's avatar

Black Hebrew Israelites are not Jewish. Here’s a link. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Hebrew_Israelites

They are antisemitic.

Black Jews are completely different than these Hebrew Israelite people. There are black people who have been Jewish for generations. There are also black people who have converted to Judaism. They are generally accepted into the Jewish community very well. Again they are not the same as these Black Hebrew Israelites.

Dutchess_lll's avatar

Are you referring to this incident
Yellowdog?

Yellowdog's avatar

Looks like CBS got the story wrong.

The Covington kids were waiting for their bus. A group of Black Hebrew Israelites approached them and started taunting them, calling them sons of whores and sons of incest. The Covington kids started singing their school song.

Nathan Phillips approached the boys, who stood their ground.

Yellowdog's avatar

I am not where I can post a link, but type in Black Supremacists harass Covington Catholic students at March for Life.

Nathan Phillips’ role is very different from what your CBS story says.

No chants of ‘build that wall.’ Plenty of filth and threats spewing from the Black Hebrew Israelites.
Nathan Phillips walks up to the boys with his drum; not part of the Right to Life event.
