How do you keep those flies at the beach from biting (bug spray does not work)?

Citronella candles have worked for me in the past as a natural pest-repellent. You can buy ones at the hardware store that are in round glass so that wind does not blow out the flames. The scent is actually quite nice, too--at least for humans (apparently not for bugs!). When I was a kid at summer camp we used to dilute a product called Avon Skin-so-Soft (I have no idea if this is still sold) and spray or rub it on our arms and legs--for some reason the bugs hated that smell, so they stayed away (without us having to use super-toxic chemicals like DEET).

Smoke keeps bugs away. A cigarette or incense will do the trick.
