Do you think Buttigieg can effectively debate Trump?

Asked by JLeslie (65418points) February 10th, 2020 from iPhone

I’m just curious what others think. I have a hard time picturing a Buttigieg Trump debate.

I can easily picture Bloomberg or Bernie going up against Trump in a debate. I think Biden might have trouble too, he seems to stumble a little in his words, even though I think he has an incredible amount of knowledge. Warren and Klobuchar I guess could hold up pretty well. Warren probably better than Klobuchar.

What do you think?

You might be putting the cart before the horse. Why not wait until after the Democratic convention to see who the candidate will be? (Looking for Bloomberg here…)
Other than that, yes, I think he could.

@kritiper I actually always tell people to vote for their favorite in primaries, and not overthink strategy to defeat the other party. I’m not changing on that, but I’m still curious about this aspect of the competition.

I think that Buttigeig would act like a professional, and Trump like pond scum. Trump has no class, and in a formal setting he would simply cheat, overspeak, stalk, lie, and otherwise act like he always has.

There is no advantage to any Democratic candidate to debating Trump. Trump is an uncultured boor and would not engage professionally.

^ Thinking that way worked against Hillary.

I don’t think Trump is all that good at debating. I would like to see someone as learned and articulate as Buttigieg go against Trump. It sounds cliched, but Buttigieg should “be himself”. Acting like Trump does nothing for Democrats.

Only if He and others don’t have anything in the closet that Trump could dig out and expose to embarrass and throw off his competitor. This has been Trumps tactics before.

Does it matter? It is like playing Chess against a pigeon.
It will knock over the pieces, and declare victory. And the spectating skyrats will chirp jubilantly.

As the incumbent, Trump would be crazy to debate ANYONE. The onus is on the challenger, and any debate with a know nothing as pronounced as the dummy runs the substantial risk of the President making a fool of himself.

Remember when Trump accused Hillary of taking smelly dumps at one of the debates?
He’ll have a field day with Buttigeig. I think people are tired of hearing him do this, even on the right. Seriously, he needs to stop. I don’t think he’ll be able to help himself and it’ll likely make Buttigeig look like the better man.

Trump will never agree to a debate. Any of the Democratic front-runners would make him look like the idiot he is.

JLeslie's avatar

@tinyfaery So, you think there won’t be any debates between Trump and the democratic nominee? I hadn’t even thought of that possibility.

tinyfaery's avatar

He’ll never debate.

Didn’t Trump and Clinton debate in the 2016 election?

Buttigieg should be able to do just fine. The big question is what Trump will do to call attention to the fact that Buttigieg is gay? Trump is pretty good at picking on people’s attributes. For example, he poked fun of Bloomberg being 5’7” by claiming that Bloomberg wanted to stand on a box if he participated in a debate.

I agree with @tinyfaery. I was going to answer the same. No way will Trump agree to a debate. My 16 year old son would own him in a debate.

Not only is Trump insecure, he feels entitled and believes he won’t need to debate.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Trump ain’t debate now that you mention it. Well then, that means it doesn’t matter how any of the Democrats will do in a debate. It will be a PR race then I guess. Getting air time, and getting out to talk to people in real life. Also, getting people to vote. Obama had lots of people going into neighborhoods to get people to register to vote, and asking them to vote. Giving then information. That’s missing again I think. My perception is it was the black community that was targeted in a big way. A black friend of mine went out and did it for Obama. I don’t know if she has ever bothered before or after Obama’s first election.

Why would he not agree to a debate? You know he lacks the mental capacity to recognise or acknowledge his intellectual inferiority.

Dutchess_III's avatar

My 6 year old could effectively debate trump. Anyone can effectively debate trump because he’s so damn dumb. That’s really not the question.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Yes, trump and Clinton debated in the 2016 election @LostInParadise. Remember the town hall, where he was looming threateningly over her? He was stalking her around the stage? She flat kicked his ass.
It made no difference.
