One on one helping or teaching jobs. Yes, that was what I did as a reference librarian. In my later years, I have taught adult ed literature classes and I’m good at that but I get stage fright.

Technical stuff

Working with people, helping people, and manager.

I don’t work in a field where I get to do that now.

Teaching.

That is what I’m doing now, yes.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

I’m pretty good at mindless manual labor as well.

I think I would excel at retirement, just can’t afford it right now.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 -What would you do with your time?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Don’t worry about that we are home owners there is always something to do, plus golf ,shooting ,off road dirt biking ,plus lots more I don’t work because I am afraid of getting bored I work to earn a living so I can enjoy things, not just take up time till I cash out.

Self Employment that involves creativity,purposeful work that helps others,

Basically everything that I am now doing in retirement.

I have waited all my life to finally have the security of retirement to have the time to pursue MY long held interests.
( Photography,Creativity,writing,Family research,Hiking , some travel,and socializing when and whom with and where I choose to).

@SQUEEKY2

I met an 85 year old man who had worked hard all of his life but had a Hobby of carpentry.

In his spare time he created wooden toys,birdhouses , trains etc and he made more money on that then he did working long hours in heavy labor.

His business took off especially at Christmastime selling so many that his daughter is going to sell his creations online.

He is the happiest now in retirement than all of his life .

Hobbies can be turned into Businesses…so look at what you love to do ..perhaps that can be turned into a Self employment opportunity that would take off?

Good Luck.

I wish I’d have went to the armed services, then been a cop. One of my few regrets.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@KNOWITALL

No time for regrets, if you really want it look at a step lower..perhaps security work?

Border security? etc check out the prerequisites perhaps?

rebbel's avatar

I could tailor make you a wooden coat.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Inspired_2write Nah, too late for me on that, I’m 18 years in, in a different career.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@KNOWITALL
Doesn’t hurt to look , right?
Check out the qualifications..one can change careers at any time in there life.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@Inspired_2write One likes to think that, but it is harder than one thinks, especially if there are debts, like a mortgage, car payments etc etc, and if you are the bigger bread winner in the family changing a job just aint that easy if you don’t have enough funds to cover the in between time, there are also benefits to consider.
I think that is why a great deal of people hate their job but are to afraid of changing, debts wait for no one and banks want their money on time.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 Plus I’m closer to 50 than 40, far too late.

There’s a lot I’d like to explore, but yes, at my age it isn’t going to happen. I’m not easily chucking a job in mgmt that I am expert in and made decent money, bennies, etc…

@Inspired_2write Eh, not for this realist haha! I aged out a decade or two ago. I have a cousin and a friend that do security, but I’m not really into night work.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@KNOWITALL Ha I am far closer to 60 than 50 have super bad arthritis in my knees so major job change aint in my books either but do want to scale back like only 4 days a week and pin to pin type thing.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 I hope you can, sounds painful.

My husband’s had several knee surgeries and that eliminated quite a few jobs for him, as he was a drywaller by trade. It was a struggle finding something less physical with a pension, but believe it or not the school has been great for him.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@SQUEEKY2
I consolidated all my debts and paid them off comfortably within four years.
So its possible, just need to find out how to go about it.

Perhaps in retirement you might find something that has aspects of Police or Security jobs, one does not need to be actively on the street , there are sedate jobs that have similar characteristics that may fill that need for you.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@rebbel I can’t stop laughing!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@Inspired_2write Mrs Squeeky and I paid off everything a few years ago, and have been happily out of debt, but the cost of living is still staggering between insurance on 2 vehicles and the house plus taxes ,food well you know the rest.
I get pissed off when people find out we are out of debt they get stupid and say well why don’t you retire?
Great and live off what??

Inspired_2write's avatar

@SQUEEKY2
Live smart not hard. Sometimes debt free isn’t all thats needed to be happier.

Yes, I’m very well suited to the demands of a solo attorney. @lucillelucillelucille

I’m suited for customer service. I’m kind and pleasant and handle myself well when dealing with unruly customers.

I am in this line of work now.
