What do you think of Billie Eilish?

Asked by anniereborn (15511points) February 26th, 2020

I am probably going to regret this, but I am curious. I know a lot of young people love her, but I am wondering about the over 21 crowd. (I realize that is still young, but for young I am meaning teens).

Do you like her music? Do you like her style? Do you like what you know of her? Do you even know who she is?

I’m just becoming aware of her. I only heard her sing once, at the Academy awards, and it didn’t make much impression on me. I did read an article about her individuality and I admire her for being her own person.

@janbb I saw her on the Academy award as well. I thought she did a fine job. But with that not being one of her songs, it didn’t really showcase her talent/who she is. And yeh I agree with you on her being her own person.

Not even a blip on my radar.

I’m in my late 40’s and enjoy her music, but I enjoy noir pop and am very into music. She’s very interesting as are her lyrics, with a little bit of the teen sneer and humor. On talk shows she doesn’t seem that interested in selling herself, which is also admirable.

After Taylor Swift for the last decade, Billie is refreshing in her non-sell out music. She was also born in a family full of musicians and entertainers, home-schooled and I find that freethinking interesting.

I have a 12 year old, so I get a heads up to new music that I otherwise probably wouldn’t be privy to. When I first saw a Billy Eilish video, maybe last summer, I thought she was a boy (partly also because her name is Billy). I used to refer to her as “he” and my daughter would correct me.

I saw her on the CBS Sunday Morning Show, talking about how she was home schooled and how it enabled her to spend more time learning about music than the average student.

I thought she was really great singing during the Academy Awards. We will see a lot more of her in the future because she’s so young and talented

I learned about her from my 16 year old son. He doesn’t like her for a few reasons. The lyrics from one of her songs comes across as homophobic and when Billie was asked about it she didn’t respond kindly.

She does have a nice voice but her songs are poorly written.

Not a fan, but I should add that I haven’t paid much attention – I wouldn’t recognize her on the street. I randomly saw her in a couple of interviews, and she seemed to be playing a role the entire time. The music itself is too dark for me.

After the Academy Awards, she was all I heard about & I wondered what I had missed. So, I go off looking to get to know her better & I discovered that she’s singing the theme song to the new James Bond movie. When I listened to it, I thought she did a beautiful job with the song, yet I thought the song sucked. I’m a huge fan of the Blues, so I probably won’t be listening to her very often. Since listening to that one song, I lost interest & haven’t thought about her for another second since then. IF she came on the radio, I wouldn’t change the station, but I also wouldn’t do a search to find her playing on a different station & I definitely won’t be buying one of her album!!!

@Jonsblond “I wish you were gay” is the title. Your son is not alone in his thoughts. Here’s the youtube about the whole controversy. Personally, I would have re-thought dropping it.

Not my cup of tea, my daughter will be 21 in July & she thinks she sings like a stuck pig in a lift (elevator) shaft!

@KNOWITALL yep, that’s it. Thank you.

This was what I was looking for. thank you. Good discussion.

I really don’t see the big deal about her. She’s average at best.

Not all young people like her hehe. I feel she’s absolutely unbearable, like most of the new breed of singers who can’t sing.
