Do you mean size and shape tile?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -Yep. I was going to make a standard 4“x4” shape with accent tiles where the corners meet but there are so many options that I am driving myself crazy.XD
I was taught by a woman who worked here
and it’s likely that they will have that look but now I am rethinking size.
3“x3” is what I am seeing for their field tiles. That might be better for a small space. idk.
What say you?

@Inspired_2write -Thanks! I was just looking at this. :)

For a small space, you might want to use a border (or maybe a stripe 4 inches down) with your accent tiles. That way some of them would be visible regardless of what was out on the counter.

How tall are the upper cabinets and ceiling? I won’t be any help probably, because I have a thing about proportion relative to everything in the room. In other words I drive myself crazy too.

Some nice tile here. If you see something you like you could google the brand name. https://tilebar.com/collection/mosaic-tiles.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvdSDg5mT6AIVh8DICh1epwovEAAYAiAAEgLJePD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Since it’s not a very big space you could buy something on the expensive side. When you get up to the more expensive stuff some of it is fabulous.

Edit: sometimes you can get similar cheaper, but get ideas from the pricey stuff.

Mine is made of tiny stones, is 8” high and has a pencil border around the the top and endcaps. My kitchen is a small 10×10 U shape.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -That is exactly my thing as well. lol
9’ ceiling in a galley style kitchen. It is small but I try t limit my time in there so space expansion is not a concern lol
Thanks for the link..I’ll make the tiles myself, I just need to decide on a size and shape.
This will take until the end of time. Then I have to make and install which will require a second life.lol

Ha! Well, a large tile sometimes can look fantastic in a small space since it’s unexpected. Oy. I was sort of into small squares for a while, like one inch squares, random colors, like maybe 5 different colors, but I also like the Arabic tiles. This one from that website I liked, but it’s risky if you needed to sell soon. https://tilebar.com/nabi-sprig-metallic-copper-marble-and-ceramic-tile.html I like the glass tiles too. A simply glass subway tile is classic with a twist. I’m a mess.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -Lol! I am limited somewhat in style as craftsman homes are what I like but the different styles and glazes are pretty interesting!
My brother has glass tiles in his kitchen and it looks good but his home is definitely modern.
Meanwhile, I saw these ceramic rugs that are cool.
Where would I put this?
anywhere I want to crack my ass when I wipe out

JLeslie's avatar

Oh craftsman. Maybe something Frank Lloyd Wright-y? What color are your cabinets?

Interesting the ceramic rug.

JLeslie's avatar

Jesus I just saw you can transfer photos to tiles. You could photograph your artwork.

Don’t do it! But I found it interesting.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -Off white/ivory. The counter tops are wood, stained in a red oak and the floor is slate grey.
Maybe I could put a photo of a person that likes to cook on the backsplash tiles?lol
I think they do that with decals. i don’t have experience with that though.

JLeslie's avatar

Oh wow. You could do a random tile or row of times with photos of cooking. That’s so cool. It said you can transfer a photo onto the tile somehow. I don’t know if you have to be careful how you clean it though.

Have you been to Lowe’s? They have a decent selection there. A floor and tile store will have much more though obviously.

Sounds nice the ivory with the wood. I’d be nervous with wood counters. Are they sealed? I do like the idea of the Frank Lloyd Wright, but they are probably a fortune. Very geometric I assume, his typical patterns.

Maybe follow with the stone theme, pick up on the slate color in the floor? The only problem is that rougher stone might also be harder to clean? Is the counter thick? Sounds like it might be “heavy” looking, I like that. Or, is it thin and more sleek? Oh, see what I mean. I need to know all the dimensions. Lol.

@JLeslie -I was checking out FLW designs. They could be translated to tile if I make ‘em myself but I did see some commercially made ones as well.
The wood is sealed but is due to be resealed.
We recently re-stained the countertop and put a light coat of poly but are going to seal with a thicker epoxy.
That being said, it has held up well over the years (about 10) Then again, I suppose I’d have to show up in there to wreak havoc on it. lol
The counter is just under 2” thick.
Now you have me thinking about textured tiles….

JLeslie's avatar

Ok. I’ll be curious to see what you decide. I’m wary about some textures, because if it has nooks and crannies it could be hard to clean. I do like texture though.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -It would be a pain to wipe away smoke damage for sure.lol
You gave me a lot to think about I love brainstorming Thank you :)

@lucillelucillelucille

I know you want sexy, right.

Tiles are so 3,000 BCE.

The small space will benefit from the continuity of a single design application.

Use the same stuff on yer wall as you use on the benchtop.

You know I’m right, as always, trust me on this kitchen haute couture.

JLeslie's avatar

Smoke? As in you plan on burning the few things you cook? LMAO.

I usually think about it in terms of cleaning up grease. Is the backsplash behind the stove?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Pinguidchance -Wood on the wall as well? Hmm.I can rid myself of the entire project the next time I cook!
@JLeslie – I burn a lot of stuff. I blame it on my complete lack of patience.I just can’t stand there and watch a hamburger.
The dog I have now will run out of the kitchen EVERY time he hears the click of the stove burner. It’s ridiculously funny according to my husband LOL

JLeslie's avatar

LMAO. I hope the fan above your stove vents to the outside.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@JLeslie -It vents directly into Martha Stewart’s kitchen. as it should
My dog learned to flee the scene as a young pup. He’s around four years old now….
My neighbor is a fireman so maybe that’s where my confidence comes from. ha ha ha
