Will this pandemic cause people (or yourself) to quit unhealthy lifestyle choices?

Asked by lucillelucillelucille (34325points) March 25th, 2020

Such as smoking, drinking, poor nutrition, lack of exercise, gettin’ old ;) etc?

I dint have much to give up. Don’t drink, don’t smoke, no drugs. Don’t go to the gym, but I walk. I eat few carbs, don’t drink soda and lost 60lbs. Never go out as I have few friends.

Go to bed early. Get up early. Work 2–3 jobs at a time to support my family.

Take all my meds. See my doctor regularly. Floss.

I mean, what the fuck do I have to give up that’s fucking unhealthy?! What?!!?!!

@cookieman -You failed to mention your proctologist… XD

KNOWITALL's avatar

No. In fact I see poor habits increasing due to stress and change in routine.
Some are going without AA and NA groups and I hope they are finding that support online.

Given the activity on the liquor aisle and the number of people picking up cartons of cigarettes that I have seen in the last two weeks, I would say, “No”.

@KNOWITALL & @zenvelo -My hub says the same thing.

I’m stress eating more now and not getting enough exercise.

Demosthenes's avatar

@ARE_you_kidding_me Same. To be fair, I don’t exercise as much this time of year anyway because it’s cold and snowy outside and I prefer to exercise outside than in some gym, but still, this thing has been making my lifestyle more unhealthy.

I am gaining weight, drinking more, and exercising less. I’m a stress eater (and drinker).

elbanditoroso's avatar

Just the opposite, @lucillelucillelucille . People will say “people with good habits got just as sick as people with bad habits. So what’s the reward for good habits? Zero”.

JLeslie's avatar

I hope so. I’m always struggling with eating well for heart health. It is terrifying to imagine having a cardiac event during this epidemic.

I have been doing an ok job while stuck at home the last couple of weeks. I have not been exercising like usual though, because I’ve been marginally sick, which has increased over several weeks in my lungs, and I just can’t do the aerobic level I usually do.

@JLeslie -My niece works in the thoracic surgery unit in a hospital at a university.
They are only seeing emergencies with heart patients. She’ tells me she spends a lot of time waiting.

ucme's avatar

I’m still going to have to eat the wife’s cooking, so that’s a no!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ucme This hits hilariously close to home

ucme's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille I will “self isolate” before dessert!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@ucme -I’d love to self isolate with a big bowl of Cappuccino Crunch ice cream but have been practicing self control for awhile now.

KNOWITALL's avatar

I definately admit to not exercising as much since it’s been raining nonstop and the dog had a slipped disc and cried every time I left. Luckily I’m not very hungry here at home, so no weight gain.

@lucillelucillelucille I specifically didn’t buy ice cream and sweets for the isolation period, because I knew I’d eat it haha!

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@KNOWITALL -I am not one of those people who can keep a dish of candy out for guests.
I marvel at the people who can do that. XD
I know what damage I could do to that. Out of sight, out of mind for me.

@elbanditoroso -In my experience, the good habits have helped me battle the bad days, healthwise.

Yes , like watching too much TV and on the computer and cellphone screens too much..but to balance that out I do my Spring cleaning now ( half done already) and now working on decluttering my apartment .
Have plenty of ideas in the magazines that I have on hand about reorganizing.

Have a long list of thing s to occupy me but not to the extent that some of my neighbors are doing…Washing there walls with bleach?( That’s an accident waiting to happen especially in isolation?)

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Inspired_2write -You just reminded me of my Spring cleaning list. I am not sure if I should thank you for this. :)

Inspired_2write's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille

Well do it in stages that way its not stressful and besides you would be exercising while doing this naturally.
Plus you would have all your Spring cleaning done well ahead of the game.
I seriously wonder about seniors washing walls now as if one fell no one would know?

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Inspired_2write- Hopefully, they have people that will check on them.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille
One particular senior 76 years of age and not that limber ( respiratory problems) stated that she was looking for a ladder to enable her to clean the wall from top to bottom….I warned her about falling and no one knowing etc ( even with her cell phone..she could drop that)?

Hope that she isn’t going to do this..she mentioned this last week and I see that she is socializing within the building..so perhaps she changed her mind?

It is unnecessary at this time to wash walls let alone with bleach! ( ammonia sometimes in bleach).

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Inspired_2write People will do what they’re going to do, good or bad. The ammonia & bleach combo is definitely bad.

Inspired_2write's avatar

@lucillelucillelucille
New young building manager had the cleaning lady ( resident) wash the hallways and rails, laundry room, coffee room with bleach!
I mentioned that years ago the Health inspector stated that bleach does NOT disinfect it just whitens the surface and told the whole Town to stop using that in businesses and bed & breakfast places.
Apparently Hospitals don’t use bleach because the ammonia causes respiratory patients more troubles in breathing.
Young manager won’t listen ( very rude in the meeting , stating that SHE had good advice on what to use?)
Someone asked her who was that ..she stated the Health Inspector????
Unless bleach ingredients have changed???
By the way this is the 6th manager in 6 years.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Inspired_2write -There isn’t ammonia in bleach but it does have a strong smell.

I’m eating less because for the first time in my life I’ve seen concerns about the food supply other than my own personal budget. I am stretching out what is on hand.

I was in pretty good shape, but I may lose 10 lbs and get to the weight I’ve been meaning to achieve “any day now” for a decade.

lucillelucillelucille's avatar

@Call_Me_Jay Well I hope you reach your goal with minimal suffering.

Be careful accumulating stuff to donate, as no one is accepting donations right now.

@lucillelucillelucille: I was thinking more my anger management counselor. :^)

I’ve seen people quitting bad habit because of this epidemic. It got a friend of mine to learn to wear a mask when she is outside. She refused to wear masks even when she knew it was harmful for her lung, so that’s a good thing. The epidemic also forced some people to stop drinking too, because they simply can’t gather.

anniereborn's avatar

I guess it depends on how long this goes on. My eating habits are a bit better. I was used to just hopping over to the neighborhood store when I wanted a treat. I don’t do that now.
