So, is it safe to eat meals or fast food that is take-out, delivery, or drive-thru?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) March 28th, 2020

Several radio commentators have stressed that restaurants are taking extra precautions, especially now, to make sure your food is safe and that you won’t contract the COVID virus.

And, there is sometimes the stress of the need for the public to trust and patronize the struggling restaurants which have lost so much business during this time. They won’t be able to stay open if they go under and close.

Then again, you are ALWAYS safer if you don’t even go there. Your chances then would be zero,

So, how safe is it to order take-out or go through a drive-through?

Our local Burger King: had Drive-thru only running last week. Both the person taking the money “Window #1” and the person handing me the food at “Window #2” used hand sanitizer between customers. I watched them twice.

It isn’t 100% safe but the risk of getting sick from takeout or shopping packaging appears to be minimal. Wash your hands before and after handling the packages and before/after eating.

It’s important to remember that most of us are going to get this, we can’t protect ourselves completely. The measures we’re taking right now are to reduce the number of people who will get sick all at once and simply keeping people from casual shopping or gathering in crowds is going to make the biggest impact there. Most people aren’t going to have to be too paranoid about pizza boxes or plastic bags, just wash your hands frequently.

I also feel it’s a good time to support local businesses/restaurants if you can because they are the hardest hit and have the most to lose in this (and will likely go above and beyond to be careful because they don’t want to lose everything they’ve worked so hard for.)

I would say no for restaurants all together now. Even buying things at the grocery store, such as produce, we don’t know who’s sick and who’s handled it. Just have to be very cautions and careful in this time. Regardless how we get our food, we all have to eat. Just be sure and stay clean and wash your hands.

Safe is all a relative term now. From what I understand the virus dies in heat so I would only buy food I can microwave or recook on the stove to heat up.

I’d remove all the food from the package, throw out the packaging, and wash my hands twice. Then I’d heat it through.

That’s what I would do, but that’s not advice, just going on what I have read.

For now, I haven’t been ordering in, but I haven’t ruled it out. I’d have them leave the food outside of my door and wait til they leave. Pay with credit card when I order including the tip.

Oh, don’t forget to clean the counter if you put the box down. I’ve been putting grocery bags in the floor. Trying to put nothing from the outside on my kitchen counter.

I saw someone get mocked for using pick up and expressing concern. Its a choice we’ve made twice in three weeks but as cases are spreading here we are sticking to home food. Sadly.

Dr Fauci spoke about this a few days back. He indicated it is safer to get take out than it is to go to the grocery store. He is getting take out from his favorite restaurant. Since he’s willing to do it as his age, I’d think it would be safe for most of us
