Why is Firefox so much than IE faster for sites like Facebook ?

Asked by McBean (1703points) September 2nd, 2008

The difference is incredible. I was about to renounce Facebook forever, thinking that it was their own horrible site that was causing the problems, but with firefox it’s a whole different experience. Whew! Is IE just too polluted with add-ons and the like?

Facebook uses a ton of Javascript. The engine for processing Javascript in Firefox is much better/faster then the one in IE.

Try it in Safari and you will see even more of a difference.

Thanks, JP. I’m remedial with anything computer related and have never even heard of Safari (in such a context, anyhow). I’ll check it out. Faster is definitely better! For some things, at any rate.

Google’s new Chrome browser is faster yet (10X on some benchmarks). Though I wouldn’t recommend it for general browsing yet.

I’m still hooked on the Firefox extensions though.

By Firefox extensions, you mean…?

Okay. Thanks.

But now I am sure you realize that Safari is just a browser like Firefox except made by Apple. And also does not have the amazing add ons Firefox does.

A bit of advice @McBean Safari for windows is not nearly as good as on a mac, so you are probably etter with firefox and all of the custom extentions.

Thank you @swimmindude for that unessesary, and fairly obvious, info.

Thanks, swimmin and Eambos. I will stick with Firefox.

Well @eambos you can see McBean says he clearly has no idea what Safari was so that is not unnecessary I just mentioned what it was. So maybe it is obvious to you and not McBean.

All of the info given here (with the exception of Meatwad’s contributions) has been useful to me.

I’m female, by the way.

swimmindude2496's avatar

Thanks you and sorry about that. I didn’t realize you were female.

You will probably also want to look out for Firefox 3.1. It’s supposed to have a much faster Javascript engine – and I mean incredibly fast, even faster than Google’s V8 which is used in Chrome. That should make a lot of difference.

Thanks, Vincentt.

Have PnL and JP noticed your new look?

haha. very funny McBean

@McBean – hehe, that was when they did the same thing to eachother. I didn’t feel like changing it again, but if anybody has a new avatar for me I’d happily apply it :P

Well…personally, I think it’s kind of cute.
