Why do so many people oppose putting grapes in a chicken salad?

I’ve never really understood the hate it gets. How do you like your chicken salad?

Personally I don’t like sweet things in what I expect to be a savory dish.
I wouldn’t put grapes into a chicken salad any more than I’d put marshmallows and chocolate chips in it, egad!

Also, grapes are quite wet… the wettest thing I’d expect in a chicken salad is maybe celery.

I don’t like anything crunchy or sweet in my chicken salad. Not even celery or onion. I don’t want to eat something I expect to be soft and then bite into something crisp or firm. No thanks.

If I were to make one, It would have chicken, mayonnaise, chicken, pickles, chicken, peas, chicken, mozzarella, chicken, and maybe some croutons.

I find grapes in chicken salad to be an exciting change of flavor & enjoy them…It’s not the way I choose to make mine, but I do still enjoy the surprise when I encounter it!!! My Mom chose to add some chopped pecans to her chicken salad & I enjoyed that as well.

I haven’t made it that way but I would be open to trying it.

Because it’s boring. You want something sweet in your savoury salad go for strawberry’s.

No one expects strawberry and chicken in the same mouthful.

What makes you think there are so many people who oppose grapes in chicken salad?
My point is, I don’t know one way or the other if people like grapes in chicken salad.
What do you do that gives you that knowledge?

Considering a lot of people put raisins in chicken salad too, grapes are not at all out of line.

I like my chicken salad with curry added, and then served on toasted cinnamon raisin bread. Each bit a mix of savory and sweet.

I tried it that way and while it wasn’t terrible, I don’t love the idea of fruit on a bird.

My mom always chopped up apples and pecans to add to her chicken salad. That was pretty good. I’m indifferent when it comes to grapes. I can take them or I can leave them.

There are myriad ways of making Chicken Salad. Even the choices at Walmart vary greatly. People should read the ingredients, or suggest beforehand, what the chicken salad will contain.

I’m usually good with anything but nuts.

@josie

Maybe it’s just a small portion of people on the internet that give me the impression a lot of people dislike it. Whenever I see videos of celebrity chefs making chicken salads, there are a lot of comments about hating grapes. Plus I have some relatives who absolutely detest grapes in them lol

@zenvelo

That sounds amazing!

Funny, I’m the complete opposite, I love when foods both have a crunchy and soft texture to them. Makes it interesting

kritiper's avatar

I don’t like there to be inconsistencies of flavor or textures in my food. Chicken salad is about chicken. Meat. Not fruit. I don’t like croutons in my salad. Salad shoud be about lettuce and certain vegetables, not hard crunchy things like rocks.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Never heard of it, but would be open to try it.
I like green olives in my chicken salad.

zenvelo's avatar

@kritiper You never put potato chips in a sandwich when you were a kid? Don’t like walnuts or almond in salad?

I don’t mind it. I’d prefer the grapes on the side, but I’ve had really good chicken salad with grapes in it. It was bought from a store already prepared, I was surprised I liked it. I’m picky about chicken salad, if it has too much mayo I’m not eating it.

Petrossian in Bloomingdales Boca used to have (maybe they still do) a chutney chicken salad that was delicious. It was sweet and savory. It had raisins in it and I guess some curry spice and mango? Not sure. I wish I remembered the name of what they used. I’m going to try to find out.

When I was younger I hated sweet with savory. I only wanted sweet for dessert. Now, I really like it.

My wife makes it with grapes. It’s tolerable if she cuts them into smaller pieces. I think this is not all that dissimilar from pineapple on pizza.

Personally, I have put grapes, onions, and jalapenos in my chicken and tuna salads. I have also put apple bits in it.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Hate it. Grapes are far too sweet for me and overwhelm the chicken.

JLeslie's avatar

I should say I wouldn’t want grapes in the salad if it’s made into a sandwich. Grapes on bread? I only like it if it’s on a bed of lettuce.

kritiper's avatar

@zenvelo When I was a kid, we were so poor that we rarely had potato chips, much less having them on a sandwich. Walnuts and almonds in salad?? Same answer.

Glambarber's avatar

What do you want grapes in a chicken salad for? I like grapes in a fruit salad but they don’t belong in a chicken salad, do they?

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Because it is savagery to treat grapes in such a way. To surround their purity with such filth.

Here is a chicken salad manifesto

No mention of grapes, a scant mention of apple.
