Have you ever been scared by a television show, or story, that wasn't a horror?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24463points) May 27th, 2020

I just watched Star Trek Voyager “Parallax” and the conundrum over which Voyager was real, scared me.

I made me not want to be on the cutting edge problems.

Did any show or book or anything scare you?

Every time I see a program or watch a documentary (or read a book) about North Korea, it scares me.

The Exorcist was a best seller when I was a pre teen. My mom got the book. I saw her reading it once, but then it was gone. I never saw her finish it. I was curious. I loved reading. I felt robbed that my mom didn’t share.
I hunted for it between the time I got home from school, and the time she would be home from work.
I finally found it.
It scared the hell out of me. I was offended by it. I was freaked out that my mom wanted to read it.
I sneaked it out of the house and buried it in the woods near our home.
Mom confronted me about it. I played innocent. No way was I going to et her bring that thing back in the house.
This is the first time I admitted what happened to it.
I forgot you stipulated a not horror. Still, I was so heavily affected by it, I had to share.

@Patty_Melt Wow I’m surprised, usually its the Parent that shelters their Children from reading things of that nature but you reversed the scenario. Good for you to take action based on how the Book made you feel, as she would have done for you, you were trying to protect her, very cool story and thanks for sharing that!!

Though you read the Book, what did you think of the Movie? If you seen it.

For me it was The Yellow Submarine. I know its a Cartoon for Godsake, I was lil and the way the some of the Characters looked and talked just freaked me out, this animation was to be watched with the lights ON!! Lol.

The movie was vanilla by comparison. I didn’t see it until several years later. It was on cable by then.
I didn’t watch it on purpose. I fell asleep watching another movie and fell asleep when I woke up, it was on.

Oh! Tommy. Tommy is a not horror movie that freaked me out. The things they did to that boy, and then after he got wealthy and his mom goes bonkers and thrashes the telly, it creeped me out. Tina Turner was amazeballs in it, but her part creeped me out too.

@Patty_Melt hmmm I had no idea Tina Turner in that, ill have to look for it and check it out.
What’s your preference when it comes to Movies?

@Jeruba GA, me too. The fact that the rest of the world puts up with such inhumane treatment of people is scary also.

@PaisleyFaye not quite. Her mom read it first, and didn’t get rid of it so that @Patty_Melt was able to find it and read it too.
I saw a movie the other day (The Vow) that Jessica Lange was in. I remember seeing a movie with her in it back in the 80s. Something about a woman being institutionalized for some bullshit reason, and the abuses (especially sexual) she suffered in the institution just leveled me. I was sobbing helplessly. My husband (now my ex) didn’t understand.

When I was very young, there was this children’s book my brother loved to read, and I’d follow along, just looking at the pictures. On one of the pages was a picture of a table with clawed legs, and it freaked me out. I don’t think I’d ever seen a table leg like that before, so I thought it was some kind of lion beast. I would always want warning when that page came up. Scary stuff.

Yes. Any and every story that concerns flesh eating bacteria, which is one form of MRSA and/or MRSA related subjects that detail the inefficiency and continuing reduction in efficiency of antibiotics.

@Dutchess_lol Thanks so much for clarifying that for me. @Patty_Melt, my apologies for the misunderstanding of your story.

Schindler’s List, Django, The Color Purple as well as a few other powerful movies and docs.

Like @ARE_you_kidding_me, the things humans choose to do to each other horrifies me.

I watched a documentary about Emmett Till. The piece so horrified me, I couldn’t sleep that night.
