Does Amazon have a complete dictonary of swear words in different languages for sale that is translated into English?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24453points) May 28th, 2020

To learn how to swear in any language?
Would you buy if available?
Humor welcome.
Just being tongue in cheek. Just wondering if one can make a profit making such a book. I would not buy it in real life.

I’m sure not. But this could be your life’s work – your contribution to the cultural understanding of civilizations and nationalities around the world.

You could compile your own profane thesaurus by spending time on Google Translate.

You could look on Amazon. There’s always that option.

Check out this list to see if you find anything that amuses you. The very first one is a coloring book, the rest are books of curse words

At least give what @SEKA suggested a curs-ory glance.

^^^^^ @elbanditoroso I swear that is a horrible pun.

There are vulgarities-to-English dictionaries for some languages, but I’m pretty sure there is no pan-language encyclopedic opus.

I am trying to figure out the connection between swearing and coloring. Could they be thinking in terms of colorful language?

@LostInParadise I think the Amazon list is of “swear words” and which is why those swear-word coloring books are showing up along with other books about swear words. Apparently swear-word coloring books is a sub-genre with several offerings, probably because it has an irony and a cathartic counterpoint for some people (in contrast to childhood admonitions against swearing, etc).

I don’t think such a thing is possible. I once bought a dictionary of slang in English (I have a collection of dictionaries of various descriptions, and this filled a gap). The number of words just for certain male and female parts and the interactions thereof was impressively extensive.

Not exhaustive, though, I imagine, because there are new expressions all the time, and spontaneous metaphors, transitory expressions, and very localized ones, often in dialect.

What are the chances that a lexicographer, or an army of them, is going to gain access to all the bad words in more than 6000 languages, and collect all the definitions? I’d say zero. And even if they did it today, it won’t reach publication for years, and it’ll be out of date by tomorrow afternoon.

Just getting started, it would probably be bigger than the 20-volume OED. The human imagination seems to have no limits when it comes to the trashing of taboos.

However, there are lots of narrower resources to get you started if you really want to look into it. And some things are well enough defined in the online Urban Dictionary for all practical purposes.

@zenvelo It may be horrible, but you’ve got to admit that it was funny!!!

Mechanics don’t need any more swear words.
