Activating a debit card?

Asked by xcatt (7points) June 28th, 2020

A few weeks ago I received a debit card and activated it 3 days ago using an ATM. (I did not change my PIN code.) Yesterday, I tried buying something online, but once I filled in all the info, my purchase was “postponed”. When I look at my bank app, it says that the card is “before activation” and internet shopping isn’t activated either. I was also told that it might take a couple of days before the card will be shown as activated on my phone, but the card should be working. (There is nothing wrong with the card itself, I checked.)

You should probably call your bank’s toll free number & speak with a customer service rep. I’ve received my card at my post office, walked out to my car & called to activate it, & then drove 2 miles to the store & used the new card to make a purchase. I haven’t tried activating one at my ATM since they started the call to activate option. Of course, my bank may be different from yours & some banks have tightened up the rules with all the scams. Still, you should start with your customer service at your bank.

“Activate your new card at an ATM by making a deposit or withdrawal. Find an ATM for your bank. Insert your card and enter your existing PIN, then use your new debit card to make a deposit or withdrawal. The transaction will activate your new card.”

Did you take money out or put any in at the ATM?
