Does Alabama matter?

Yesterday, former Attorney General Jeff Sessions (who was fired by His Trumpiness) lost to Tommy Tuberville (former football coach at several universities) for the republican nomination for senator in Alabama.

Tuberville will run against democrat Doug Jones in November. Tuberville’s main qualification is that he kisses Trump’s butt and vice versa.

Why does Alabama keep nominating and electing the worst candidates? Are the state even relevant any more?
