Do you ever wish for the power to go out for a bit?

So that you can unplug and relax to the rain? It happened at work 25 years ago and it was awesome. Home outages are fine too.

I live in hurricane land, power outages are not unusual here. I don’t ever wish for it, but I know how to cope just fine.

Not wish, no.
Whenever our power is out though, it can be quite cathartic to strip back to basics.
Love just sitting, chilling under candlelight without all the tech distractions.

Ask me again, when drumpf is on a ventilator.

When that happens I have to go into work so no.

Have to admit wishing for this during a final. Don’t think I have as an adult though.

Absolutely not. We lose power all the time, and it’s been a real bummer. Sometimes we lose power up to a week (in suburban MA).

Losing power usually means we have to make sure backup battery is functioning for sump pump. And when it’s out for a longer time, I need to pull out a generator and run it to charge battery backup, run sump pump, and try to run extension cords into the kitchen to cycle our refrigerator to keep us from losing food (and our basement chest freezer).

When I want to unplug and relax, I love being able to do that and not lose hundreds of dollars or flood my house or have to take vacation time to be home to manage the house.

EDIT: Also, in the winter, we have to worry about pipes freezing and the whole house getting destroyed. We’ve come pretty close a few times, and have friends that have basically lost their house to this.

Also, I spend a lot of time outside in the woods “unplugged”.

@hmmmmmm I guess one can access the breaker box and only turn off what isn’t necessary for a hour or so (like refrigerators and fish tank). An unplugging vacation. Put phones on airplane mode. The absence of electrical sound is refreshing to me. Like Earth Hour.

Nope it happens enough here due to all the trees. Plus like @hmmmm said you have to prepare. It’s annoying.

You could just turn off the tech toys for a while. That’s a possibility. Maybe even flick the light switch to OFF.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Darth_Algar Ok. Sometimes I sleep for the whole day and give my eyes a break. Hopefully those eye drops I was prescribed will be helpful.

I lost power for 12 days after Sandy and many other times as well. No thanks!

I know the feeling. I enjoy a short, < 6 hours, power outage.
Things are quiet. My battery backup for the sump pump takes over. There is no air circulation fan or refrigerator droning in the background.
it is peaceful.

What I don’t like about a power outage is the uncertainty. Will it be out for fifteen minutes, an hour, eight hours, eight days?

In cold weather, it’s no fun because we need heat. In hot weather, it’s no fun because we need AC or fans.

ARE_you_kidding_me's avatar

Pex plumbing and a crawlspace for the record.

@jca2

Yep. A power outage isn’t just a matter of inconvenience or being peaceful or relaxing or whatever. It’s a matter of potentially dangerous temperatures building up inside your house. It’s a matter of potentially hundreds of dollars lost in spoiled groceries.

Ahh, listening to the gentle drip drop of your ice cream going from freezer to fridge.

nightwolf5's avatar

No, but I actually do enjoy it and make the most it, on the rare occasion it does go out.

On second reading, this question looks like it appeals to lock-ins…
