What ever happened to bananas Foster?

Asked by josie (30934points) July 28th, 2020 from iPhone

I know what it is. My mom lusted for it and I looked it up.
I also know that when my mom and dad went out to dinner at a “nice place” she would get bananas Foster for desert.
I really don’t eat desert, but I find myself searching for bananas Foster on the menu.
There is always the suicide chocolate cake or something, but never bananas Foster.
My late mom would hate that.
Where did it go?

There are a few places here that I know of (pre lockdown) that feature it. They would make an interesting tour. I can list 5 and God knows there must be many more. The pricier places still flame it at your table.

There are so many classic, yet seldom seen, desserts:

Shoofly pie
Baked Alaska
Cherries Jubilee
Apple dumplings
Lemon chess pie
Charlotte Russe
Blueberry buckle
Bananas foster (you’re so right, @Josie)

There are trends and fads to desserts, Restaurants try to anticipate demand and stay current, but they become predictable. How hackneyed have crème brulee and tiramisu become, after years on every menu? It would be nice if some creative chefs would revive a few of the oldies.

It ran off with cherries jubilee, never to be seen again.

@lucillelucillelucille And left Strawberries Romanov crying in her beer.

@josie My Mom loved Bananas Foster and raved about a restaurant where she had it. And yes, I don’t see it or the others named any more.

Last I’ve seen (a few years) you could get it at one of the restaurants in Peppermill Casino, Reno. It’s the restaurant across the hall from the geothermally heated pool. The pool is outdoors, but warm even when they have to shovel snow around it.

I can see six high-end restaurants within 45 minutes of my house, I’m out in the sticks, that list Bananas Foster for dessert. Couple of them have Shrimp and Grits on the menu.

It exists in some places. I had it for the first time just a few years ago. I’ll PM you where.

I had never heard of it, so I looked up Bananas Foster. How the heck have I missed this all my life? It looks delicious!

It’s labor intensive so probably that has something to do with it.

I’ve taken many cooking classes at community colleges and twice with two different teachers did bananas foster.

It was in many many restaurants in Memphis when I lived there. I moved away in 2012.
