Has it surprised you to find out just how recognizable you are with the lower half of your face covered?

Asked by Jeruba (55829points) August 17th, 2020

Why did the outlaws in the movies ever think they were disguised?

Notice that the Lone Ranger and Zorro covered the area around the eyes.

Yes the “good” guys wore the professional masks—the crooks being ruffians employed any dirty old rag or bandanna assuring our contempt.

It surprised me in the beginning, until I realized that I had no trouble recognizing others.

Nobody has recognized me yet.

I think that’s a sign.

Time to see what I can get away with

It hasn’t surprised me. The eyes are the most recognizable part of the face. Even without my mouth and nose, I’m still Demosthenes. :P

It surprised me a lot, since I have a mustache that I am known for, but no one can see under a mask.

I have had people recognize me while wearing a mask AND sunglasses. I just figure I will never get away with anything!

Apparently I am recognizable from behind, too. I was walking on a trail and a friend came up to me from behind on a bike, and shouted. “Hey Pete!”. I asked hime how he knew it was me, he said he could tell from 200 yards away.

@zenvelo, a friend of mine who was a great observer of people said there’s nothing more distinctive about a person than their walk. Sometimes she used to imitate people’s gait, and it was uncanny how much it conveyed.

I also remember reading in a detective novel that when people try to disguise themselves, if they don’t change their walk it will give them away. And this isn’t about anything like the “slight limp” trope. It’s more that we judge our own appearance usually close up and standing still (in front of a mirror), but other people are much more likely to see us in motion and at a greater distance. Obviously you have a recognizable walk that you’re not aware of but others are.

Not at all. I have very expressive eyes.

I am not surprised. I think we evolved to recognize eyes especially so you’d notice someone watching you from behind a bush.

I think it’s the eyebrows.

Just pictured bank robbers with shaved eyebrows. Nyuk.
