Are there any books on how to read?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) September 29th, 2020 from iPhone

I’ve noticed as I age that my ability to digest books is much different than my early years.

It takes some discipline to be a competent reader.

For instance, have you ever read multiple paragraphs, and not really comprehended one word due to your mind wandering?

Is there book yoga? Is there a meditative practice someone has already designed to help prepare the mind for reading comprehension.

Reading out loud helps me stay focused. As far as finding a book, you might want to look into books on minimizing memory loss which might relate to your issue. My father was constantly hunting up books on memory loss… Eventually his doctor prescribed some kind of medication to help with dementia, but that was quite a few years after his initial symptoms.

I found that reading narrative writing rather than long drawn out descriptive writing better as a reader gets lost in the descriptions.
I really don’t need every blade of grass to be described..haha.
Basically “get to the point” in a story to get the full underlaying plot is all I need.
“Just the facts mam..”

For non-fiction, I find it helpful to take notes. It forces you to concentrate on the reading and relate it to what you read previously. It will slow things down, but you end up with a helpful set of notes.

This book is a classic on how to read

Mortimer Adler was a philosopher/educator, a classic example of an intellectual.

As far as my mind wandering after reading multiple paragraphs, it really helps if it’s a subject I am interested in, that it’s well written, and in a large enough font that I don’t have to struggle to pick out the words, etc.
