What do you think life was like before humans figured out how to watch tv?

Asked by doyendroll (1771points) October 15th, 2020

Did people just play games uno like cards or ‘spoonerisma’ where you have to guess what words and phrases mean eg. audio radiance?

What did people do with that extra 30 hours a week?

We interacted with each other!!! We socialized. We talked. We visited friends & family where we had a meal together & discussed what was going on in our lives. Children were encouraged to play outside & use their imagination. We played board games or occasionally played a card game. Uno hadn’t been created…yet. We played a lot of Scrabble or Monopoly. We listened to the radio a lot & we read books a lot. We also cleaned the house & maintained the lawn. The one thing that we didn’t do was to say that we were bored. That meant that the adults would come up with something for us to do!!!

And…we listened to phonograph records. Played the piano and sang.

Kids colored, painted, played with clay. Built fabulous structures with wooden blocks. Played pretend games with each other and with dolls. Invented games for indoors and out, summer and winter.

Mothers ironed. Shirts, sheets, blouses. Cooked, made things ahead. Darned socks. Took care of babies. Baked cookies.

Fathers came home from work and read newspapers, paid bills. Did household repairs. Built things like yard furniture. In my father’s case, also prepared lectures and graded papers.

People wrote letters. Lots of letters. Long-distance phone calls were expensive. Hand-written letters in envelopes came and went every day. My father groused loudly when first-class postage went from 3 cents to 4 cents.

I don’t remember a time without TV. But my folks do, of course. They just ran around town and hung out. Mom was working in the fields.

Nor do I. But I was watching Roy Rogers with my grand pa before Caesar was knee high to a frog though.

My earliest memory of TV was watching Bugs Bunny on a round TV. Tha tha tha that’s all folks!

Well geez.. this thread makes me feel like I have one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. Great nostalgia, but these days, I have a anxiety attack if I leave home without my cell phone.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Me too ^^^^ but only because I keep my phone in a wallet case that also houses my driver’s license and debit card.

Nomore_lockout's avatar

I need something like that : )

I stared carrying my phone in a wallet case in 2016…and quit carrying a purse!

We played checkers , solitaire, listened to the radio , listened to LP records (that never stopped) . My mother crocheted ( hope that’s spelled right) and rocked my cradle with her foot at the same time.
