Why do rural voters vote conservative?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24453points) October 30th, 2020

In my province of Alberta, Canada, most rural non big city voters tend to always vote right wing (conservative).

Is it the same in your country?

They’re farmers. Farmers rely heavily on foreign trade which the government has a great deal of control over, and farming is about making money, which conservatives are all about.

I would say so, but I can only speak for rural areas of Central Texas. A lot of Trump Pence signs in the boonies areas, and a lot of these people bought into that nutzoid Jade Helm bull crap of about 7 years back. I actually heard some callers on a local conservative radio show saying they had seen unmarked white “U.N.” vans loaded with U.N. troops rolling through their areas. Just how they came to the conclusion that they were United Nations vans or who was inside them, I won’t even hazard a guess.

In the US also. I think they tend to be more religious, and the Republicans in the US have been playing to the religious really hard for 40 years now. Abortion has been a big wedge issue, against gay rights, which I guess they call family values or traditional values. Also, people in rural areas tend to feel like they can live off the land and take care of themselves and don’t like to pay taxes for services they don’t perceive they benefit from. Additionally, in America, the Republicans have pulled in the gun thing as part of their platform.

@JLeslie Yup and a big part of that Jade Helm hooplah played into the gun craze. Obama and the Dems were going declare martial law, take guns from citizens, and get this – incarcerate anyone who resisted in Walmart basements. I kid you not. I mean, you can’t make this crap up.

I think it’s because in rural areas, people are “stuck” on their old fashioned values and ways. In cities, there’s more culture, more art, more progressive thinking which leads to an open attitude about sexuality, rights for women and minorities, abortion and other things.
