Have you heard of women who refuse to allow recliners in their house even if their husbands want them?

Asked by Aster (20023points) November 2nd, 2020

I was reading a conversation of two women and they said they “draw the line” with recliners. They’re “so ugly” they said. Their husbands want to watch tv in a recliner but no; their wives wont permit it. I think it’s very controlling of them and I feel sorry for their husbands (even if they’re henpecked).

That’s funny, in a sad sort of way. Why a woman of any age would be so authoritarian is beyond me.

I have never heard of this specifically. However I know there are controlling women AND men that do that sort of crap in general.

Do they offer any sort of rational reason, such as that it’s a piece of furniture that’s way too big for the room, or that if the guy just wants to sleep, he should go to bed?

I was like that. lol. Now, I would “allow“ it. Now, they have nicer looking ones than 25 years ago. If he had really insisted I would have gone along.

In our house we haven’t had recliners, but our main living area has always had large comfortable sofas and ottomans, and easy to stretch out and put your feet up.

I haven’t heard of that specifically, but I can imagine if the lady of the house puts a lot of time, effort and money into decorating, she might not want a big, ugly pleather recliner coming into the room to ruin the look.

Isn’t the house both the husband AND wife’s home? Geeez

I’m surprised so many people are surprised.

What about women who want curtains, duvet covers, wallpaper, and living room furniture with floral patterns and their husband doesn’t want to have that in the house?

The couple compromises, or one just lets the other one have their way. It’s the same thing.

@JLeslie For myself, I guess it’s cuz I have never been into interior decorating. All that you said above is pretty foreign to me.

@anniereborn: Right now, the farmhouse look is very popular, made popular by Chip and Joanna Gaines. I can’t imagine a big brown recliner or any color recliner in with the farmhouse look.

Here is a link to a scene ( 10th image) of a popular “Bonanza TV series” western where it looks like a recliner or near to one .

@jca2 I just can’t relate to that at all. Our home is painted all white, no wallpaper….and has all hand me down furniture. We rent, but that doesn’t make a difference. I just never was inclined to do that. I can see how a recliner wouldn’t look right in such a house. But, I can’t imagine having a house like that.

I recall my wonderful mother in law having two matching recliners for years. They were LazyBoys covered in a very nice floral print. They didnt look anything like those huge leather ones and they were pretty small. She was quite feminine and always had beautifully decorated homes.

Where I live a lot of people have sofas with recliners built in. One friend of mine has two sofas making an L, and multiple places recline.

@JLeslie: Yeah, I think those sofas have taken the place of recliners in many homes.

My cousin in the city has a custom made, white leather L-shaped sofa and it has two built in recliners.
