Do you judge people by the music they listen to?

No, of course not.

I asked a question like that a few days back, but you know it don’t hurt to ask again, just don’t repeat the same question over and over and over, and I listen to heavy metal, People think I’m crazy, well I do love to fight.

I don’t. I figure if I don’t like it I don’t have to listen. If they don’t like mine they don’t have to listen.

i like music for the lyrics not so much for what it sounds like.

if someone doesn’t like what i listen to i try to make them listen to the lyrics, and hopefully they end up liking it.

No, I don’t. I like all kinds of music so I can enjoy pretty much whatever is on. If I don’t like it, I’ll say I don’t like it, but I won’t judge the other person for liking it. Did that make sense?

No. Of course not. I’m not really that shallow, just a bit of a smartass.

My own musical tastes tend to be a bit eclectic, pretty much running the gambit. Just no country or chamber music.

I don’t judge, but I probably do make some assumptions. I will admit that I hate it when a song with offensive lyrics is blaring so loud in the car next to mine that I have to explain the lyrics to my children. Whatever you want to listen to is fine, but it needn’t be forced down my children’s ears as well.

when i look through someones ipod in repairs i do sometimes think “oh, one of those types” as i roll my eyes…

oh well,i guess in a way that affects how i think about someone, maybe because then i’ll think stuff like “wow? he can actually listen to that junk, persistant type” or “yeah, mindless junk, seems like the type for that”

well just in general. i’m not saying all teenagers do this, but i’m sure you’ve never seen a fourty year old with the music loud enough you can hear it in the next car.

yeah, exactly. its because they think this makes them look cool. which i don’t think it does. heavy base gets on my nerves, you can’t even understand the music. it just makes it sound like the car is going to fall apart.

When I lived in Alameda, CA they did a story about how certain gangs would use the loud music to signal other gang members cops were coming or it was clear or such things.

I now am a bit freaked by it.

@ dollfacee – me either. it was one story on one local network out there in Oakland. I too love the unknown rocker. If I get caught I just go with the flow. Especially if I am singing backup a la Midnight Train to Georgia.

Of course I judge people. We all do. Do I think negatively about a person because they like something different than I do? Not usually. I like to think about what it is people like and don’t about different kinds of music or different artists. It can tell you a lot about the person, but not always.

I believe that the particular genres of music someone listens to is usually characteristic of certain aspects of his personality or indicative of other topics he might find intriguing , but as far as making a judgment about them or forming an opinion, no, I don’t do that

I’m less concerned with what music people listen to, more concerned with how they use music. Is music used as an environment, as a drug, as a mood enhancement, etc.

You should see the looks I get because you would think rap would be coming out of the car I drive or by the way I look.

Well, kinda. It depends on how they listen to it and what relatino they have to the music. it can tell a lot about a person, so yes, to a certain point, i judge people by what they listen to. and i don’t think that’s wrong.

No i do not. but sometimes, it does give you an idea of who the person who they really are.

only with emo’s cause they tend to live out their music a little too much, I mean ok I dont have to like every song and not all music has to be flowerpower but do u really have to listen to music about cutting yourself and then do it and show people that you’ve done it? Besides the bad energy really sucks I mean I’ve never seen an emo smile, come on your life can’t be that bad! So when something hood happens to you smile say thank you and be happy for a while before you go back to cutting yourself with the blades of mysery

@Gbach wow.. had a bad experience with an emo? and I really don’t think that’s very wise to make such stereotypical judgements of those types of people… maybe their lives really are that bad and that particular “addiction” is their only outlet. Not to say it’s right or healthy, but you’d be surprised the circumstantial extremes forced upon some of us.

Rocker All dressed in black with long hair: kid with obscure habits
Punk kid: skater/biker kid with working parents and a drug habit (probably prescription pills)
Emo: sad kid with suicidal ideas (my gf says I’m an emo v. 2.0)

All of this is taken out of my personal experiences

i think ‘emo kids’ will cut themselves even if there were no such thing as emo music.

@TheHaight While channel surfing saw a snippet of the Jonas Brothers in concert today and the screaming gaggles of girls and had the same thought. I so don’t get it. Not to say anything bad about them, but they seem just OK to me not as special as the Disney machine has cranked them up to be.

I don’t understand country music, or any of the “culture” thereof whatsoever. “Rap” music that rips off other musical styles irritates me.

I’m sure the people that listen to that stuff are nice.

is rap music ? i thought it was more of a way of identifying those yelling fake-criminals showing of their goods on tv, backed up by a monotone bass sound

@flameboi: I haven’t know too many people who listen to just one kind of music, so I think it’d be pretty hard to find out if your stereotypes apply or not. Most people listen to more of a variety than that.

@iwamoto: there are different kinds of rap. The stuff you describe is not the type I like. Cornel West writing on Constantinian rap vs prophetic rap might interest you.

@Knotmyday: I also like some country although very very little of it depending on the guitar skills and/or lyrics. I don’t seek it out because I think and here’s my engineer geek speak showing the signal to noise ratio with country tends to be way too low. I just don’t want to spend that much time filtering to get to the few things that are good. But if I happen to find someone I like a little twang now and again is not going to put me off.

I do judge people. Not by the music they listen to, but by the music lists they display on social networks or blogs. It’s a type of online identity performance…a weird, artificial, crafting of self. I do t necessarily like the people whose music I like. Or dislike people whose music I don’t like. I create an imaginary narrative for them and plunk thru into a temp file.
