Trump's Twitter account has been permanently suspended. Do you agree with Twitter's reasoning?

Asked by ragingloli (51958points) January 8th, 2021

As of now, though, the ”@potus” account is still up.

https://blog.twitter.com/en_us/topics/company/2020/suspension.html
After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.

In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on a principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.

However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules entirely and cannot use Twitter to incite violence, among other things. We will continue to be transparent around our policies and their enforcement.

The below is a comprehensive analysis of our policy enforcement approach in this case.

Overview

On January 8, 2021, President Donald J. Trump tweeted:

“The 75,000,000 great American Patriots who voted for me, AMERICA FIRST, and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, will have a GIANT VOICE long into the future. They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!”

Shortly thereafter, the President tweeted:

“To all of those who have asked, I will not be going to the Inauguration on January 20th.”

Due to the ongoing tensions in the United States, and an uptick in the global conversation in regards to the people who violently stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, these two Tweets must be read in the context of broader events in the country and the ways in which the President’s statements can be mobilized by different audiences, including to incite violence, as well as in the context of the pattern of behavior from this account in recent weeks. After assessing the language in these Tweets against our Glorification of Violence policy, we have determined that these Tweets are in violation of the Glorification of Violence Policy and the user @realDonaldTrump should be immediately permanently suspended from the service.

Assessment

We assessed the two Tweets referenced above under our Glorification of Violence policy, which aims to prevent the glorification of violence that could inspire others to replicate violent acts and determined that they were highly likely to encourage and inspire people to replicate the criminal acts that took place at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

This determination is based on a number of factors, including:

President Trump’s statement that he will not be attending the Inauguration is being received by a number of his supporters as further confirmation that the election was not legitimate and is seen as him disavowing his previous claim made via two Tweets (1, 2) by his Deputy Chief of Staff, Dan Scavino, that there would be an “orderly transition” on January 20th.
The second Tweet may also serve as encouragement to those potentially considering violent acts that the Inauguration would be a “safe” target, as he will not be attending.
The use of the words “American Patriots” to describe some of his supporters is also being interpreted as support for those committing violent acts at the US Capitol.
The mention of his supporters having a “GIANT VOICE long into the future” and that “They will not be disrespected or treated unfairly in any way, shape or form!!!” is being interpreted as further indication that President Trump does not plan to facilitate an “orderly transition” and instead that he plans to continue to support, empower, and shield those who believe he won the election.
Plans for future armed protests have already begun proliferating on and off-Twitter, including a proposed secondary attack on the US Capitol and state capitol buildings on January 17, 2021.

As such, our determination is that the two Tweets above are likely to inspire others to replicate the violent acts that took place on January 6, 2021, and that there are multiple indicators that they are being received and understood as encouragement to do so.

I agree now. It was five years too late.

^^Agree. Much too late. There will alway be abusers of their freedom to speak. Unfortunate.

Capitalistic entities promulgating freedom of speech have got to implement some necessary limitations at some point. Inciting violence. Fomenting hatred. Being stupid as stupid does with deadly repercussions. Some lines needed to be drawn.

Definitely. Oliver Wendell Holmes said there are limits on free speech, “One cannot shout fire in a crowded theater.” If that isn’t what he is doing, i don’t know it is?

Besides, as a private entity, they have a right to ban anyone from their platform.

I’m having very mixed emotions regarding suspending his account!!! First off, I don’t believe in censoring anyone for their beliefs. However, after he events of Wednesday, I don’t feel that merely suspending his account goes far enough. I feel that he should be charged with treason & have his American citizenship taken away & then given a one way ticket to the country of his choice (other than the USA)!!!!

Demosthenes's avatar

@hello321 Elaborate. :) Because I’m leaning toward “no” too but I’d like to hear your thoughts.

hello321's avatar

^ I don’t trust corporate entities to manage speech.

janbb's avatar

@LadyMarissa That’s all Twitter can do. it doesn’t mean that’s the end of it – that would be ridiculous. Detention for inciting treason??

Demosthenes's avatar

@hello321 Pretty much how I feel. I don’t disagree that they can do it, but that’s not an interesting discussion, it’s whether they should that’s the question. If we don’t trust the government to manage speech, then corporations are hardly a good alternative. I really think they shouldn’t be banning people who aren’t doing anything illegal.

hello321's avatar

^ I’ve also been a Twitter user for years and have seen plenty of left voices banned while dangerous right/liberal voices continue.

janbb's avatar

@Demosthenes @hello321 Sorry guys. Inciting violence is illegal and hate speech is illegal.

hello321's avatar

^ Maybe the law should force Twitter to ban him. Would a court case be involved?

Is this a legal issue or a matter of a private corporation being able to ban who it wants?

Demosthenes's avatar

@janbb I don’t believe there are hate speech laws in the U.S. Inciting violence is illegal, yes, but the argument is whether that is really what Trump did. I can’t stand Trump, but arguing that someone was “inspired to violence” (a slippery slope we don’t want to go down) by someone’s Tweet is not the same as claiming they actually incited violence.

Yellowdog's avatar

There was no violence incited in the speech.

Twitter, along with much social media, is silencing conservative voices, and Donald Trump is probably the most influential speaker.

Voices telling YOU what Trump said or meant are allowed, but YOU cannot hear the truth from the source because it is banned.

I do agree. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Fluther, and any other private media company has a right to control access and use of the platforms they create and own.

And to eveyone who believes that somehow this is a “free speech” issue – No judge or jury anywhere has ever found that incitement to imminent lawless action is a protected right. More than that, the 1st amendment only applies to GOVERNMENT restraint of speech or other expression by citizens. Courts at every level have ruled repeatedly that such protection cannot be used to compell a private entity to publish or broadcast material it finds inappropropriate.

And no one should forget the obvious fact that as a government official Trump does not act or speak as an ordinary citizen while in office. Unlike the rest of us, his conduct is wholly determined by his oath of office : To protect and defend the Constitution, and faithfully obey and execute all laws. When his actions or words violate that oath he can’t claim any privilege or protection.

janbb's avatar

@Demosthenes I’m not going to argue with you but there are provisions in various state laws against hate speech:

Of course Twitter can ban the fool from its site. Trump has no more right to rant on Twitter than to force a newspaper to publish his views.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

He is a billionaire. He could buy twitter and order them to reinstate his account. I believe that he would do this. Or start his own television/internet/radio station.

stanleybmanly's avatar

He’s a phony billionaire just as he is every bit a fraudulent copy of a human being. There is NOTHING positive about him which can be considered real. This nonsense about being “shocked” at this scumbag’s behavior is pathetic. There hasn’t been a day since his corrupt ass slithered down that escalator that he has failed to stridently exhibit his thuggish imbecility and breathtaking ineptitude. The man is a walking scandal without reason or end.

elbanditoroso's avatar

The deed is done. And it isn’t just him, it is his crony Flynn and the idiot lawyer Sidney Powell.

Trump is getting to be yesterday’s news. He is irrelevant. People aren’t paying attention to him. He is essentially impotent and will be even more so in ten days.

That’s got to hurt…

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 He owes Putin and the Russian Mafia more than a Billion.

@RedDeerGuy1

He couldn’t afford Twitter.

Dutchess_III's avatar

There is a new user on Twitter called Barron John 1946….and he rants and raves just like trump.

ragingloli's avatar

@Dutchess_III
It is clearly a parody account.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

I see Barron John and John Barron and both are jokes.

Sample tweets:
“I MUST REMEMBER TO USE ALL CAPS!”

“My goddamn idiot sons want to watch Football with me! There grown men what is wrong with them? Better not be any neiling!”
