At the next summer Olympics do you expect the results to be historically improved or historically worse or normal?

Asked by Ltryptophan (12091points) February 12th, 2021 from iPhone

We’ve had a year globally where events have been cancelled. Has this led to some Olympians practicing more than ever and prepared to crush records?

Have they taken time off to avoid potential injuries?

What is the impact covid19 will have on the results?

It’s tough to say how the Olympics will pan out. I’m not too familiar with how other sports are but, if the Olympics go as scheduled but without fans, than I think you would get below average play outta some sports, like basketball, baseball, and soccer because many pros will opt out for that reason and because of covid.

But for other sports like track and field, I think you will see pretty normal results. Events like pole vault, shot put, 400m, 200m, 110 hurdles, and some distance events could see some big performances because there is multiple athletes that are actually pretty close to world record form.

So I think that this Olympics will be pretty interesting to see still, it just might be awkward with out all the fans or little amount of fans and im sure the opening and closing ceremonies will be altered because of covid as well

If you are asking about the scale of competition, I think it is going to be mediocre. That is because I think we’ll see smaller contingents. Countries would be hesitant to sent full strength squads, as the risk of mass infections can jeopardize their entire sports structure for a few years! In terms of personal performances of the athletes, I’m sure they’ll give it their all. They will aim for their best because that is what they train for. If the best athletes are in action (which I expect, they will…because smaller contingents doesn’t mean lesser athletes), we’ll see records being broken, albeit in a smaller playing field.

I suspect it will depend a lot on the sport and what are the extra difficulties training under COVID conditions. Team sports may be compromised by logistics of practicing and not getting each other sick.

Reversion to the mean.

While some athletes have avoided any injury by not competing for a year, others who would have been at their prime last year are aging out. Training in many sports at an “olympic” level takes a toll on the body and an eventual decline.

I would have guessed it won’t be much different than usual, but reading the answers so far I see I might be completely wrong. I would think most athletes have been practicing as usual, especially the last 6 months.

For your entertainment Oona and Gage Brown during their ice dancing practice in NYC’s Bryant Park to Metallica. They are wonderful to watch. https://metalinjection.net/video/figure-skating-duo-perform-to-metallica-nothing-else-matters I don’t know if they are going to the Olympics, but I love watching them. I know they have been competing during covid. I couldn’t help but notice how empty the park is, I don’t know what time of day it is.

I found this Q&A on the Olympic website about the summer games. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.olympic.org/news/amp/ioc/tokyo-2020-q-a

Normal. No reason to expect anything else.

Worse. Considerably. No competition for the better part of a year.
