What size, in your opinion, is the ideal size for a mobile phone?

Asked by ragingloli (51958points) February 18th, 2021

My old Samsung phone was 6×11 cm, which made it fit perfectly in my hand, and was ideal for one handed operation.
In contrast, my current phone is 7×15, which in my estimation is already too big, and I have to use at least 2 hands to use it.

It’s not necessarily the size, but the aspect ratio that means the most, in my opinion. Back in the day, smartphones would have 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio, so they weren’t long candy bar shaped beasts. There was more real estate to read and be productive.

Now, phones are absurdly tall and narrow. Take the Galaxy Note series. The Note 1 was 16:10. The Note 20 is 20:9. It is silly.

Anyway, the days of hardware experimentation and innovation are over. Phones are supposedly becoming larger, but they’re really becoming narrower and taller.

Innovation now means removing features.

I recently tore a pocket when putting my phone in it. It’s 156.7×74.3×8.8 mm

I miss the days of small phones.

I initially played the odd puzzle game on mine, and do use it as a conveniently portable camera (it’s still nowhere near as good as my dedicated camera). And then I got entirely bored with all its features and mainly just use it for phone calls.

So—half the size?

For me, it’s so it can fit in my pocket as I like it with me most of the time, even in the house. Which means it has to be fairly small. That is a problem though for reading apps at times.

I have an iPhone SE right now and may graduate to the small iPhone 12.

I have the small iPhone 12. It’s a good size as it fits in my back pocket.

I really liked my old slider phone, maybe around 2×4”.

I like the size of my iPhone 6 (7½” x 5½” x ¼”)

I remember when celphones were trying to get as small as possible. Now they’re getting bigger. I have an old iphone 7 and it’s a perfect size for my hand.

My Samsung phone is 8×16 cm which is just about right as I use it for a huge variety of things. It comes with a pen so I don’t expect to use it with one hand. I always have it with me, I carry it in my jacket pocket in cold weather and my trouser pocket when it’s warm.

I would like a phone to be in my glasses with a separate ear piece.

@Caravanfan See this solid explanation for that change in the trend.

Something that can easily slide into my back pocket. And that I can use with one hand.

My iPhone 8 (5.4”x2.6”) finally died last month. Just upgraded to an iPhone 12 mini (5.2”x2.5”).

@raum Do you like the 12 mini? That’s what I’m considering.

raum's avatar

@janbb I do! Though I was perfectly content with my iPhone 8. So maybe not the best person to ask techwise. :P

janbb's avatar

@raum Hey – I’m still pretty happy with my 6 SE so you probably are the person to ask!

@bob_ Hilarious! (And great to see you again, by the way)
