What military rank do you prefer?

Asked by yaujj48 (1176points) March 14th, 2021

I been searching military rank and I been wondering what rank would you guys choose in the army?

I would prefer normal general rank as I can lead an army like the historical generals and commanders. I also don’t want to be to powerful as field marshal or chief of staff since I like to fight in combat as well. In short, I want to emulate the generals of the past.

What about you guys? What military rank do you guys prefer?

If you want to fight, you might be better off as a Major or Colonel. When I was a kid, Colonel was my favorite idea of a rank, for much the same reason.

If I were a warrior, I’d rather be in a pre-gunpowder era, though, since I don’t fancy being suddenly killed by artillery or snipers. So I’d prefer to be a prince or lord or chieftain. Since I’d probably rather not have to go to war, preferably someplace out of the way that doesn’t get called to war much if at all.

“This topic brings me to that worst outcrop of the herd nature, the military system, which I abhor. That a man can take pleasure in marching in formation to the strains of a band is enough to make me despise him. He has only been given his big brain by mistake; a backbone was all he needed. This plague-spot of civilization ought to be abolished with all possible speed. Heroism by order, senseless violence, and all the pestilent nonsense that does by the name of patriotism—how I hate them! War seems to me a mean, contemptible thing: I would rather be hacked in pieces than take part in such an abominable business.”

From Albert Einstein’s 1931 essay, The World As I See It.

Such an odd question. When I think of rank I think of money and job responsibility. The higher the rank the higher the pay grade. My dad was an 06 when he retired. In the Navy that’s a Captain. In the Army that’s a Colonel. My father was part of the uniformed services, but not the armed services.

I can’t even imagine being in combat or leading an Army. The idea of it is so beyond what I ever imagine for myself. I don’t want anyone to have to do that. The uniformed services do so many other things worthwhile. I loved being a manager in my career, so if I were in the service I expect I would be managing soldiers or sailors or staff, but likely it would be pushing papers or doing some sort work that helps others.

Prefer for what?

I have no interest in being in the military – never did. Was too young to be drafted in the Vietnam war.

You need to define another piece of your question. If you are talking about a lifelong military career, then Admiral or General is a good rank to have. If you’re talking three years and then out, then Captain is OK with me.

Basically, your question is too ambiguous to answer.
