How long after the dentist yanks ALL of your teeth out do you get your dentures?

Asked by kritiper (25757points) March 21st, 2021

A buddy of mine says he’ll walk out with dentures the same day. I have my doubts, based on the report from a co-worker from 40 years ago, who had to wait for his gums to heal and the swelling to go down before he got his.

They put them in day one and you leave in so they help shrink your gums.

Yoiks! That sounds dreadful! I’ll call him Frankenstein when he gets his done…

@kritiper Dentures are dreadful. That’s why we work so hard hard to keep our teeth. I’m 70 and have a full mouth of teeth. Of course I have a lot of crones and one implant. Plus I’ve had extensive periodontal gum surgery and 3 sub gingival curettage procedures and have regular teeth cleaning 4 times a year. I use an Oral B, SoniCare and a water pick (“Sonic Fusion 2.0”) and floss after every time I eat. Still I have serious gum disease. I may lose what’s left of my natural teeth some day. But not without my continual fighting. I might resort to having a mouth of implants but I will NEVER have dentures.

Our friend @johnpowell had all his teeth removed after radiation and needed to wait about 6 months for things to heal. He talks about it in his “So I have cancer” thread.
Hopefully that is a different case for your friend.

Ask your dentist. Depends on healing.

@gondwanalon Either you have the best insurance in the world or are extremely rich if you can afford a mouth full of implants.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@anniereborn Agreed! My friend has the same thing but a $10k bill.

As far as dentures, it was $960 out of pocket with insurance, just for uppers for my friend three years ago.

gondwanalon's avatar

@anniereborn Neither. Money is not important to me. My health is. A mouthful of fixed (implant) teeth can be done with under $20K.

janbb's avatar

@gondwanalon Wow! I paid close to $4,000 for one implant, a year or two ago.

@gondwanalon Apparently we have different ideas of what “rich” is. Don’t mind me, I am just jealous.

gondwanalon's avatar

@janbb A full set of teeth (top and bottom) can be put in with just 8 implants.

@gondwanalon Good to know. I hope I never have to find out though! Like you, I’ve gotten lots of crowns and one implant so far.
