Just how effective are the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines?

Asked by crazyguy (3207points) April 25th, 2021

There are two sets of numbers that I have seen.

The strange thing is that they are both endorsed by the CDC.

1. About 5,800 out of 77 million fully vaccinated people have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Seven percent of those who have been infected have been hospitalized and 74 have died.

This is taken from
https://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2021/04/15/cdc-breakthrough-covid-19-cases/

Based on the calculated efficacy of (77 million – 5,800) / 77 million = 99.992%, one may be tempted to shed the mask and other safety measures.

2. The set of numbers shows an efficacy of about 90%. See https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/p0329-COVID-19-Vaccines.html

So my question is: which is it?
