How are menthol cigarettes worse than regular cigarettes?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46811points) April 29th, 2021

And how are African Americans more prone to smoking methol?

I read that Biden is going to ban menthol cigarettes.

For my two cents, cigarettes should have been banned 50 years ago. Smoking is an odious habit.

read this it is a historical study of how cigarette manufacturers created the demand for menthol in the black community.

Target market + wealthy manufacturers = dead people.

My ex, Jerry, smoked menthol. He’s black. Rick smokes them too. I just wondered why menthol seems to be worse than regular.

There is more crud in the smoke for your lungs to filter out than regular cigarettes.

It’s genetics, and a very well known preference in my peer group. Many of my friends still think Newports are cool.

Jerry smoked Kools. It about killed me when I tried one once.

@Dutchess Me, too. I hate them.

I think the idea is to make the cigarettes taste more palatable so they are easier for the uninitiated to smoke – and get addicted to.
When I was kid in the early 60’s, a “bad” kid I knew would steal a few Kents from his parents. He said “They taste like cherries.” He wanted me to join him but I did not accept the offer.
Even when I was little I knew that it was a bad idea to try it. Every adult I knew who smoked said they wanted to stop and they sounded like they needed to clear their throats all the time.

When a kid my age, in the smoking area HS turned down a smoke because “I don’t want that crap in my lungs!” I really admired that….but I kept smoking. Guess that makes me an idiot.

Different story for me. There was a family that lived across the street – mon, dad, two kids. We played with the kids all the time – my sister and I would hang out with them day and night.

If I was 7 or 8 at the time. I would guess that the mother (let’s call her Mrs. L) was somewhere around 35–36 or so.

Mrs. L. smoked like chimney. We would hear her have smoker’s cough all the time and their house stank of cigarettes. I remember her telling all us kids once – “don’t start smoking, it’s going to kill me.” She knew it but she couldn’t stop.

Sure enough she died of lung cancer by the time she was 40. I was maybe 12 when that happened.

Anyway, it made a strong impression on me. In my entire life, I have never smoked a cigarette.

Menthol seems to make cigarettes more addictive—it makes nicotine more potent in the brain:

Next question…..how is that targeting African Americans?

nikipedia's avatar

@Dutchess_III is that in response to my comment or do you mean more broadly?

Dutchess_III's avatar

The article claimed it was targeting African Americans.

Here is an article that describes how tobacco industries targeted African American communities to increase uptake of menthol products: https://academic.oup.com/ntr/article-abstract/6/Suppl_1/S55/1124544

There are biological differences as well—people of African descent tend to metabolize nicotine products differently (more slowly) vs people of Caucasian descent—so the addition of menthol may have a stronger biological impact in those slow metabolizers: https://jpet.aspetjournals.org/content/332/1/202.short?casa_token=IgH1sj2wGU8AAAAA:5NPoXYwca1o_tTfm8uymXMtWoXyrKQdgVN1Kez2oZA7u0H6BRZgSVRdMKIt3X7X4dlMWyP9NsEQsmA
