General Question

crazyguy's avatar

Do you think Tucker is anti-vaccine?

Asked by crazyguy (3207points) May 10th, 2021

I am not asking for your general reaction to Tucker. I know that already. What I am asking is a very specific question.

Some background. One of my least favorite CNN ‘journalists” is Jim Acosta. In the linked segment he plays a clip from the Tucker Carlson shows and then asks a question.
https://www.cnn.com/videos/business/2021/05/09/tucker-carlson-vaccine-rhetoric-reiner-acosta-nr-vpx.cnn

Please watch the link before you respond. My patience is infinite.

I have a few comments:

1. There is a difference between being anti-vaccine and being against mandatory-anything.
2. To me it seemed pretty obvious what Tucker is talking about. How about you?
3. If you did understand what Tucker is talking about, what do you think Jim Acosta is talking about?

That brings me to my bottom line. I have no idea if Tucker has been vaccinated or not. However, just because of the possibility that he has not, I will not assume he is an anti-vaxxer. How about you?

Jim Acosta is deliberately misrepresenting the position of Tucker Carlson.

To accidentally do this, in journalism school, would give one an automatic ‘F”. At least up until 2010 or so it did. To do it intentionally is pathetic.

To say being against mandatory ANYTHING is the equivalent of being against the thing itself is a false dichotomy.

Why someone who takes a ‘liberal’ position believes in mandatory anything is a contradiction, as is deliberately misrepresenting another person’s position.

In these polarized, divided times, journalists need to represent both positions fairly and accurately so that we can understand the other person’s actual position. It doesn’t mean they have to agree with it, Just know what it is.

flutherother's avatar

What I heard Tucker say in the clip was this,” no one should be forced to take this or any other medicine against their will”. It is a straw dog argument as the jab isn’t being forced on anyone against their will.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

He is against ANYTHING the Democrats are for.

Like the Doctor said I would like to know if Tucker himself has been vaccinated or not.

Yellowdog's avatar

@flutherother You are perfectly correct. Tucker said that no one should be forced to take any vaccine. That is not the same as being anti-vaccine,

You are saying that there IS no mandate that people should be required to take the vaccine,
I respect that position, Even so, Acosta is deliberately misrepresenting Carlson by saying he is anti-vaccine.

@SQEEKY2 It was the Democrats who opposed the vaccine originally, because of its association with Donald J Trump. They were at first saying the vaccine could not even be developed that quickly; Then they were saying they would not take it because of Trump,, Then Faucci started saying it was okay, so a few Democrat senators were caught ‘skipping in line’ getting it. Kamala Harris said she was taking it to show her supporters that it was safe.

Now, the Democrats are saying it was the Republicans who were anti-Vaccine. Not True. Trump advocated a ‘warp speed’ development and promised it—it was available quicker than promised.

The anti-Vaccine crowd are not of any political persuasion. Some people just don’t trust the vaccine. Others simply do not support that anything be mandatory,

LostInParadise's avatar

Who has been pushing for mandatory testing? Nobody of any significance. Tucker’s argument is at best vacuous and at worst it is fear mongering, an attempt to discourage people from being vaccinated by trying to convince them that the government is forcing them into it.

BeeePollen's avatar

He’s pro-vax for himself and his family, anti-vax for his viewers.

LostInParadise's avatar

My previous statement should have said “mandatory vaccination” instead of “mandatory testing”.

lastexit's avatar

It’s likely Tucker has been vaccinated but, like Trump, won’t let anyone know. Tucker likes to stir the pot so he can keep his ratings up and remain in the limelight. This vaccine is not mandatory. I’d like to know what his credible evidence is for thinking anyone will be forced to take it.

Although he’s probably not anti-vaccine, his rhetoric could be perceived as being such by his followers.

KNOWITALL's avatar

Tucker said he is vaccinated in the second clip specifically.
So he is not Anti-Vax, he’s simply saying no one should be forced.

Tucker’s point of view typifies the current feeble minded low watt mentality defining conservative reasoning, much in keeping with that of the OP’s insistence that the corona virus is but a ruse cooked up to push the Democratic agenda. Here’s the way they want to frame it:

Socialism—BAD!!

BUT—up pops a lethal virus compelling an obvious and urgent requirement for effective remedy.

The conservative approach from the outset? Play down the lethality of the disease as well as the probability of its duration. Ignore the lessons from previous outbreaks and carry on as usual. It’s the sort of mindset that would try to convince you that the fire department represents government interference with “free market” dictates, while fires themselves are plots contrived by Democrats to validate the requirement for a SOCIALIST fire department. It is of course a rampantly STUPID argument, yet nevertheless carries right over to this discussion on masks, vaccinations and all things covid.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@stanleybmanly A report this weekend showed it’s mostly evangelical Christians, Blacks and Latino’s who are showing low numbers on vaccinations.
Careful with the name-calling, Democrats need those votes.

—————————————————————————————————————
Although similar proportions of adults are estimated to be hesitant, Black and Hispanic adults are less likely than white adults to actually be vaccinated, according to Kaiser Family Foundation data. Across states that report race and ethnicity data for vaccinations, the percentage of white people who’ve gotten at least one vaccine dose (39%) was 1.5 times higher than the rate for Black people (25%) and Hispanic people (27%), as of May 3, the foundation found.

crazyguy's avatar

@KNOWITALL That, my friend, is an awesome find. My next question will ask respondents to guess how many seats the Democrats will lose in the mid-terms in 2022.

crazyguy's avatar

@KNOWITALL Could you post a link to the second clip? I remember seeing that but cannot remember when.

crazyguy's avatar

@lastexit Any listener or viewer, who perceives that Tucker is advocating against the vaccine, needs much more than having his/her head examined. S/he needs to be taught English!

crazyguy's avatar

@LostInParadise If you doubt that is the next step towards the mythical goal of herd immunity, I would like to sell you a bridge…

crazyguy's avatar

@BeeePollen Please listen to/watch the clip before mouthing off!

KNOWITALL's avatar

@crazyguy It was on right after your linked video.

I did hear San Francisco is close to herd immunity, so looks like we all need to keep an eye on that, as we’ve all been told herd immunity is not going to work with this/ variants.

My only point with the actual demographics, was that Democrats need to chill on the negativity. Education is key, availability is key. I have yet to see any call for mobile units or any rural community events nationwide, yet that’s actually what we need-make it easy. The lines I stood in were not suitable for disabled or elderly in any way.

crazyguy's avatar

@Yellowdog When I was drafting this question, I knew that, in spite of any instructions to the contrary, the usual suspects would start mouthing off as soon as they saw who was being talked about. I was not surprised or disappointed.

You are absolutely correct in your response to @flutherother that there is no mandate YET. However, there are colleges who require vaccination, and The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has already weighed in, holding that, “generally,” employers have the right to require their employees to get one of the approved vaccines. It is just a matter of time.

crazyguy's avatar

@flutherother You, sir, have the honor of answering my question before anybody else. You, sir, also have the distinct quality of not reading the question before answering it.

The three people that thought your answer was GREAT, should share the honor with you, but I have no idea who they were. I know who the fourth one is, by the way. That would be me, who appreciated the timely response.

LostInParadise's avatar

@crazyguy Who is pushing for mandatory vaccination? What evidence do you have that anyone is planning on it? How can you accuse the government of doing something that they do not even talk about? The simple fact is that since Trump left office, the country is doing a good job of combatting the virus.

lastexit's avatar

@crazyguy Agreed. You’ve just described many of Carlson’s viewers.

seawulf575's avatar

To those of you claiming no one is trying to force a vaccination, how do you explain the idea of vaccine passports? That has been floated by many, many politicians…mainly Democrats now that they are in office…and by many “woke” companies. While it is not forcing as in holding you down and injecting you, it is forcing in the coercion meaning.

LostInParadise's avatar

@seawulf575 , Biden is not considering vaccine passports, though the EU, Britain and Israel are either issuing or considering them. Link

Here is a quote of the White House Press Secretary from the article:
The government is not now, nor will we be, supporting a system that requires Americans to carry a credential. There will be no federal vaccinations database and no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination credential.

stanleybmanly's avatar

This idea of coercion makes for some interesting discussion. The issue is clearly one of civic obligation vs. personal autonomy. It is a question along the lines of rudimentary education being mandated compulsory by our governments as is the national draft for military necessity. It is overwhelmingly understood that when it comes to infectious diseases, the road to ideal containment and eradication of communicable contagion lies through overall vaccination of the population. It should therefore be understood that your right to refuse vaccination does not exclude my right to keep your silly ass as far away from me as possible. And by the same token, I expect the state to enforce my right and isolate you from the rest of us. For those of you who believe otherwise, I suggest you look up the history of Typhoid Mary.

crazyguy's avatar

@LostInParadise I believe in keeping an open mind, always.

However, just to be certain that we understand each other: would the Biden that you are talking about be the same guy who is also on record opposing things like:

1. Packing the Court.
2. Federal funding for abortions.
3. Busing.
4. Eliminating the death penalty.
5. Crack cocaine.
6. Sanctuary cities.

Yellowdog's avatar

@LostInParadise The Biden administration has contributed NOTHING new to the plan that was not already well in motion

@lastexit ,Trump has had the Corona Virus before any of the vaccines came out, There is no need to have the vaccine if you already have the antibodies.

When Trump had Covid, he was treated with Remdesivir, which he did not announce because then another effective anti-SARS medication would have been demonized.

lastexit's avatar

@yellowdog Trump also had his vaccinations before he left office. No one knew until much later when an assistant confirmed that he had.

As I recall, it was known almost immediately what he was treated with when he had covid-19.

LostInParadise's avatar

@crazyguy , You will have to provide links for those items. Is anybody in favor of crack cocaine? I would be surprised to see Biden opposed to sanctuary cities or of eliminating the death penalty. I know that he took a neutral stand on eliminating the filibuster.

crazyguy's avatar

@KNOWITALL I played the next two videos, holding my nose all the time. Please provide a link.

crazyguy's avatar

@LostInParadise Here is the Wikipedia link that I selected those items from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_positions_of_Joe_Biden

KNOWITALL's avatar

@crazyguy It was Acosta not Tucker, sorry.

crazyguy's avatar

@KNOWITALL No problem. BUT I do remember a segment, perhaps during the previous administration, that Tucker was strongly pro-vaccine.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@KNOWITALL The “negativity” with which you saddle the Democrats is more about the frustrating exasperation in dealing with the conservative positions on this disease and the lethal consequences. They die like flies and STILL don’t learn.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Is the right capable of learning @stanleybmanly ?
They just blame EVERYTHING on the democrats.

seawulf575's avatar

@stanleybmanly remember when I said that if Biden got elected you would stop hearing 24/7 coverage of the number of cases and the number of deaths and all that? You said I was crazy, that the media would still cover it. How often do you hear it now? Not at all.
But you make an interesting point. Interesting in that you echo another thing that I predicted…that Biden would claim credit for all of Trump’s work and the left would follow along lockstep with that claim. Biden has done nothing so far except allow all that Trump put into action to go on and to claim credit for it. It wasn’t Biden that pushed for the vaccines, it was Trump. It wasn’t Biden that cleared roadblocks, it was Trump. But it sure is Biden claiming credit. And you echo it nicely.

stanleybmanly's avatar

I don’t know where you get your news, but as far as I can tell, covid coverage from the MSM has diminished not one bit. What has disappeared is outlandish and ridiculous pronouncements from the White House, but the coverage of deaths, surges and other controversy is just as intense as we have it here at fluther. Like Obama, Biden came into office to inherit the fkup of the Republican ahead of him. Obama stepped into the Bush administration’s greatest depression since 1929, and Biden took office with Trump’s most severe and clearly botched pandemic to ever hit America, complete with the half million corpses that I also predicted, along with the fool’s multiple and well deserved impeachments. As for clearing roadblocks, Trump is remembered for nothing of the sort. On the contrary, he openly and stringently denied the threat of the disease from the outset, flagrantly poopooed every sensible precaution to check the spread of the disease and openly flaunted behaviors GUARANTEED to accelerate infection and death. His infamous massed death rallies garnered hundreds of thousands of conservative idiots in formidable crowds coast to coast to assure the funeral industry the single greatest coffin bonanza in American history. His obstinate and deliberate stupidity infected the virtual entirety of the Republican White House with his own fat dumb ass its most notable victim while the luxury suites at the nation’s elite hospitals were piled to the rafters with intransigent perpetually STUPID conservative notables. You would think that you clowns would by now have the sense to be at LEAST embarrassed by your own stupidity, yet here you are, still defiant with God only knows how many of you were granted the luck He supposedly allows fools and children. I would give good money to know how many of you dummies managed to survive a covid sickbed to come here and continue your silly arguments. It is frustrating and so exasperating dealing with your foolishness that I could spit.

LostInParadise's avatar

@crazyguy , According to the article you linked to, Biden is now opposed to capital punishment and he criticized Trump’s withholding of funds to sanctuary cities.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

OMG @seawulf575 Covid19 is still hot in the news up here every channel.
So you are not hearing it in FOX and OAN what a shock.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@SQUEEKY2 You can’t get through to these people with any rational view of reality. @seawulf575 does not see covid as an epidemic, but rather a convenience contrived by Democrats to cast Trump in a bad light. The fact that the media reports on the disease is all the evidence required to prove the press indisputably in league with the Democrats and dead set on doing that party’s bidding. Trump’s tweets weren’t proof he’s a psychopath. But any notice or reporting of them in the press is proof of media bias. How do you get people with such a mindset to see reality?

SQUEEKY2's avatar

True, they still believe Covid19 is a pandemic just to make the orange haired one look bad, what I can’t seem to understand how did they get the entire planet to go along with it?

stanleybmanly's avatar

It isn’t the rest of the world, but it’s fascist divisions that take the alarm over covid as the excuse for bolstering their agenda (such as the crackdown on immigrants, vilification of Asians, etc.). The world looks at us and concludes that we’ve gone crazy.

seawulf575's avatar

@stanleybmanly and @SQUEEKY2 How many new cases happened yesterday? This month so far? How many deaths? THAT was what was being thrown around 24/7 right up until Biden took office. Care to try telling me now that the coverage didn’t change? It might be getting covered, but certainly not the same way.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Do you actually contend that the answers to those questions are not available? Do you seriously believe the urgency concerning the disease has decreased because the press refuses to cover it, or because the infection rates are no longer rising out of control? Do you want to see the press go ballistic? Let Biden announce that swallowing bleach is a suitable antidote, or announce that Fauci and the CDC are ignorant know nothings and HE is the expert. When Biden starts tweeting nonsense day and night that counters common sense, the press will be there. It has been Trump’s open and repeated outright lies and exaggerations which supplanted virtually any news concerning the disease itself. The truth of this is undeniable. Meantime, there isn’t a surge or daily local death count that is missing from the evening news.

LostInParadise's avatar

The simple fact is that the infection rate has been declining since Trump left office in January. The change is fairly dramatic as shown here

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Yesterday @seawulf575 The USA had 32,801 new cases and 722 new deaths.
News outlets usually don’t say this month so far but do give a day to day number.

crazyguy's avatar

@LostInParadise Be careful with ‘simple facts’. From your link, the rate of decline since Biden took over has been less than the rate of decline in May and June of last year…

LostInParadise's avatar

That is only because the the infection rate was so high last year. There was also a second (or third) wave last winter. Any reasonable interpretation of the graph shows a dramatic decline since January.

Here is a timeline of Trump’s mishandling of the pandemic.

seawulf575's avatar

Gee…32,801 new cases and 722 new deaths yesterday. Remember when that was shouted out on all news channels repeatedly? And remember when they followed it with condemnation of the POTUS for allowing that many deaths? And not doing anything to stop the new cases? Where is all that? I mean, do the cases matter or not? And if we throw it on the POTUS, why isn’t that being done with Biden? After all, he hasn’t done ANYTHING to combat this disease…except claim credit for what Trump did.

stanleybmanly's avatar

Here’s the difference. If covid is a fire, Trump was the chief who when informed of the blaze dismissed it as a nuisance then proceeded to throw gasoline on the blaze as the fire consumed the block. The new chief comes into office to face a blaze completely out of control, the buildings burned to the ground and half a million corpses. What’s the new man to do? “Claim credit for what Trump did?”

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Yeah @stanleybmanly Maybe Biden should have said it will just go away with warm weather,or people should still go to work if they have mild cases of it.
Maybe he should just start screaming it’s all just a Republican hoax to make him look bad?
Maybe he should fire his chief contagious disease expert and put a Xray tech in charge instead?

stanleybmanly's avatar

And recommend that people drink bleach as a preventative, declare masks are for sissies, then “lead” by example through his personal passion to shun both masks and common sense, deliberately violating the prohibition against crowds thus making himself ALONE responsible for hundreds of thousands of unnecessary infections and deaths.

stanleybmanly's avatar

If I didn’t know better, I would swear that Trump had adopted 100% the agenda of the 2 dummies here. Perhaps Biden needs THEM as Presidential advisors.

seawulf575's avatar

I find it funny that the two of you can’t actually admit the media is biased. You can’t acknowledge they treat Democrats better than Republicans. You can’t even acknowledge the way they reported Covid numbers when Trump was president is different than how they are doing it since Biden was elected. And you feed off each other making up stuff and treating it as fact.
You do understand it tells everyone more about you than you think it does, right?

LostInParadise's avatar

You just don’t get it. When you are in the middle of a pandemic, what makes the news is changes in the infection and death rates. Due to Trump’s mismanagement, there were two waves in the data that got people’s attention. Since he left office, the numbers have been declining.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Yeah @seawolf the same way FOX and AON are biased.

stanleybmanly's avatar

@seawulf575 I really do try to view the world as you see it and describe it here. And I do believe myself a cynic. But for the life of me I cannot understand why YOU or anyone living would require the aid of the media to assess Trump BEFORE he rode down that escalator. This is the point. If the media were 100% in the fool’s corner 100% of the time, it should not matter. All human beings have their flaws, and there will be no impeccably perfect politician. But THAT also isn’t the point. The point is that to this day, after 5 years of fully exhibiting on a daily basis every vice and flaw of character against which you have been warned for your entire life, you STILL cannot recognize that both you and the Republican party were doomed to certain inescapable disappointment and all but certain catastrophe. The man is so horrifically flawed, that his defects are beyond measure. You STILL don’t get it. It doesn’t matter whether or not the press was biased. What mattered is that Trump UTILIZED the press to magnify and exhibit those flaws at every opportunity. He JUST WOULD NOT SHUT UP. He left the press NO CHOICE. There is no defense of Trump which will allow the integrity of anyone attempting it to escape a loud and spectacular trip down the toilet!!

SQUEEKY2's avatar

But-But @stanleybmanly He did put that travel ban on from China , and look how well that worked.
I will agree with @seawulf575 American news is biased, but even Right wing Fox had a hard time blowing sunshine up Trumps butt all he had to to do as @stanleybmanly pointed never shut up.

stanleybmanly's avatar

It just drives me crazy. He just refuses to accept that bad news is NOT proof of bias. It is NOT the press that renders those Republicans who STILL back Trump as STUPID. If they STILL back Trump, THEY ARE STUPID. It is neither bias nor exaggeration to say it out loud.
