Can someone show me on a map where the 90th parallel (90 degrees longitude West) crosses the Tropic of Cancer?

Asked by Yellowdog (12216points) May 25th, 2021

On Bing today, to celebrate National Towel Day, a giant Sperm Whale is pictured because it’s surprisingly difficult to find a really great image of a bowl of petunias

Whatever.

With today’s burgeoning technology and big tech, it is likewise very difficult now to find a specific spot / coordinates on the globe. Before globalization, when we actually HAD globes, it was easy to find the North and South pole, the Arctic Circle, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.

In more recent years, I could merely type in coordinates and my computer internet (not sure what program) would show me the spot on the globe, on a map.

Right now, Google Maps doesn’t show anything I type in. The Tropic of Cancer might be a bar and grill in the Bahamas. When I type in 90 degrees longitude West and Tropic of Cancer, the map shows a nice shot of my immediate neighborhood location but says my search matches no results. No, my neighborhood is not in the tropics.

I presume this location is in the Gulf of Mexico kind of near the Yucatan Peninsula but I want to know exactly where this place is.

Can anyone show me these coordinates on a map or globe, or how far it is from the Yucatan Peninsula?

The Tropic of Cancer is at 23 degrees 27 minutes North.

90 degrees West Longitude is the meridian that passes through Memphis TN, New Orleans, LA, through El Salvador and into the Pacific.
.
23 N 90 W is in the Gulf of Mexico, due South of New Orleans and about even with just north of Tampico Mexico.

(By the way, “parallel” always refers to latitude; longitude is a meridian. 90 degree parallel is either the North or South Pole.)

You can see in google maps by typing n latitude first, longitude second, as in 23N 90 W

Thanks. My browser won’t support Google Earth anymore, but Google Maps works!

Google Maps can’t find 23 n latitude 90 w longitude

Says to make sure your search is spelled correctly. Try adding a city, state, or zip code.
Try Google Search instead
Should this place be on Google Maps?
Add a missing place

So, if anyone can post me a map or link to a map image…

Tried that—all white instead of a map.

Must be a browser issue or something. apologies and thanks—

@Yellowdog

Try this on the map linked by @Tropical_Willie:

Scroll to the bottom of the page. Underneath the right side of the “map”, you might see a block labeled “MAP PARAMETERS”.

If you do, click on the button to the right of MAP TYPE:

Then you should get a popup menu. If you do, click on “Physical”.

You should then see zoom controls in the upper left corner of the map.

If you zoom out, you should see that those coord’s are in the approximate center of the Gulf of Mexico.

This is not what you are asking, but I have been to this monument at the 45th parallel in Wisconsin.

@Yellowdog The link that @Tropical_Willie posted works great.
You need to zoom out a few times to see where it is – in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico.

If that were so, it would be blue.

But no matter how far I back out, the earth is covered in a global freeze of white. No features, no seas, no oceans, no rivers, no mountains, no place names,

Its a Browser issue, but thanks to all, especially @Tropical_Willie and others who provided links,
