Does it make a particle of difference to science that Jeff Bezos and Richard Branson are both going to be launched into space in the next week or two?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33157points) July 4th, 2021

Or is this just a silly publicity stunt?

What happens if one or the other doesn’t return safely? Do they lose their contracts with NASA?

The world would be better place.

Personally, as much as I don’t like Bezos, his choice of Wally Funk as a traveling companion makes me happy. I’ve been a huge fan of the Mercury Thirteen since the beginning. I wish Gerry Cobb could have gone, too.

Well, if both of them get vaporised during reentry, or explode on the launch pad, it will provide evidence that the cosmos has a consciousness, and a sense of humour and justice.

To me it doesn’t.

I don’t think it’s a publicity stunt. Bezos doesn’t need publicity; that’s not his life. I think it’s a way for a guy with too much money to get a charge out of doing something entirely special. But it’s not going to affect me in any way. I won’t even be paying attention to any news reports unless there’s a disaster.

As for science, well, if there’s something to be learned, I hope they learn it. It’s sort of like the new Wright brothers.

Don’t make me no mind. But as someone said, perhaps they could have used their riches to ameliorate world hunger instead.

The only point of science they might offer is to see how the physical aspects of the launch and time in space impact older people. Bezos is something like 56 and Branson is about 70. You will have to generations to look at there.

@seawulf575 and Wally Funk! She’s 82!

@canidmajor There is a third data point!

It’s scientific proof that egos expand in space.

Yes. If two billionaires, one bald, one with thick hair went to space and returned with baldy now with hair and hairy now bald…science has an exciting new job to do.

Deep space??

Its not who that’s important but if successful it will pave the way for a whole new industry going into space.

As Nostradamus predicted in the 15th century the end of the world and he pointed out a planet that is livable that will be located.

In his name is hidden that planets name ( Damus). As he changed the spelling of his name later as a clue to look for it.

I just hope they took magnetic excursion, and the south atlantic anomaly into account as they planned their flight paths.
