Had anyone received a Google Message about Google security drive update for July 26 2021 and how this will affect one's Files ?

Asked by Inspired_2write (14486points) July 28th, 2021

A security update will be applied to Drive
On September 13, 2021, Drive will apply a security update to make file sharing more secure. This update will change the links used for some files, and may lead to some new file access requests. Access to these files won’t change for people who have already viewed them.

Procedure sounds complicated to follow.

I have not seen any such message. No gmail. No notification when I go to the Google Drive web site.

However it looks to be an actual thing from Google, as I found it on their site, at: https://support.google.com/a/answer/10685032?hl=en

Depending on your needs, you may not need to do anything or care.

It looks like just another Google thing to me. I stopped actively using Google Drive when they starting &$%*@ quarantining some of my files for no good reason, and being non-responsive when I tried to communicate with them about it.

@Zaku
Was worried that it was a scam?
But also read the long description and instructions to follow in order to ask questions “after” its done.
So complicated.
Its all about not letting scammer get into your files .
One will need a password to share files, so I assume that its when sharing Google doc files, of which I don’t use anyways?

I was thinking it might be a scam too… (that is, a scam beyond Google’s own depredations).

Yes, it is about sharing files (meaning making them available without being logged in to Google). If you don’t share your files, it won’t have any effect. ... I think. As you say, it’s complicated and not the clearest explanation.

I got that message too and I’m ignoring it. I don’t have anything important on Google Drive.
