When a dog gets sprayed by a skunk do they learn to stay away from them?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46807points) August 24th, 2021

Rick took Cato out to run last night, and 60 seconds later the camper fills up with skunk smell.

Oh. Shit. No.

Yes.

He sleeps in my bed and it was a fitful night. I did ok as long as I kept my head under the covers.

Did he learn a lesson?

Also he didn’t like getting sprayed with Febreze.

I think it depends on the dog. I used to have a goofy Chesapeake who never really got the hang of leaving skunks alone. I should have bought stock in tomato juice companies. All my other dogs have been pretty canny about skunks.

Ugh ugh ugh, sorry you have to deal with this.

Based on my experience with my Akita, that would be no.

It was almost an annual event. No indication that he learned from it.

Does tomato juice work? For a dog who refuses to take a bath @canidmajor?

It was so long ago, @Dutchess_III, that other methods weren’t even discussed. It was a stopgap measure at best requiring gallons of the stuff and vigorous scrubbing. I’m sure there are products now that are better, and don’t make your house and yard look like a slaughterhouse. To this day, smelling tomato juice reminds me of that dog. :-)

Wish we could leave him outside. Blerg. And we don’t have a bathtub.

On a positive note he has short hair so Rick rubbed him down with a towel right afterwards.

It’s not SO bad. I can’t even smell it after a while. Dumbass.

Thanks for the link.

Ugh, so sorry. Some dogs would be more likely to stay away, but there’s plenty that will remember how unpleasant skuns are, and then get themselves into more trouble by trying to attack. And then there’s those that never stop being curious.

I wouldn’t spray him with Febreze. You don’t want him licking that stuff of his coat. @canidmajor‘s link looks good.

Well this has been a shitty week! Yesterday my son tried to cut off his leg with a chain saw. 10 stitches.
Now this.
It isn’t easy having dumbasses in the family!

It depends on how smart the dog is.

I met someone who has a raptor (bird) companion which hunts, whose bird went after a skunk, and learned not to do that again after one encounter.

Is your son ok? That hurts just to think about!

The right combination of enzymes are effective at reducing any smell. Leave it on long enough, and the smell will go away completely.

A couple of years ago I moved into a house that had a closet that smelled like cat urine. It was hideous. I contacted a friend who ran a cleaning company and he used an enzyme product on the area. At first the area smelled kind of perfumey, but in a few weeks both a cat urine smell and the enzyme smell were gone. Natures miracle makes an enzyme products safe to use on animals.

In the case of this product you may have to apply more than once.

I.keep running into random skunk smell.
It’ll go away on it’s own.

Dead skunk in the middle of the road, stinkin’ to high heaven! Remember that silly old song? Your situation reminds me of that. : )

Mine didn’t. He chased everything and was sprayed twice in one year.

Yes and no to dogs learning a lesson. I had a dog that got sprayed by a skunk. Solid hit, right in the chest. His eyes watered, his nose was a mess, and he got the humiliation of being bathed over and over again until he was at least tolerable.

2 days later he went out to show that skunk who was boss. This time, I suspect he was barking at the offending creature and it sprayed him again. This time, right in the mouth. I never knew him to chase a skunk again.
